Yap Announces Funds for Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel

RICHMOND – A provincial grant for $5,000 will go to support the Richmond Committee on Disability as it prepares to host the 1st Annual International Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel, John Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston announced today.

“This event will showcase athletes with disabilities from around the world,” said Yap. “The Bonspiel will be a great opportunity to host elite athletes in our community, showcase our sporting facilities and build momentum for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

“It’s important we, as a community and a province, continue to create more accessible and inclusive facilities and events for those who have physical disabilities,” added Yap.

In addition to $5,000 in provincial funding, the Rick Hansen Man in Motion Foundation has pledged $2,500 to the Richmond Committee on Disability in order to run this event. The Bonspiel will be held at the Richmond Winter Club from December 11 to 15th, 2007. Teams from Europe and North America will be present.

Traffic Fine Revenue Brings Additional Officers to Richmond

RICHMOND - The City of Richmond has used part of its traffic fine revenue grant this year to once again boost police presence in the community, adding twelve additional RCMP members and two civilian position crime analysts this year, announced Richmond MLAs Linda Reid, Olga Ilich and John Yap.

Richmond received $2,180,432 this year in traffic fine revenue. The city now has 206 RCMP officers.

"I would like to express my gratitude to City Council for making good use of this year's traffic fine revenue and hiring additional RCMP officers," said Reid, MLA for Richmond East. "I'm also pleased to see initiatives like adding storefront police stations in key locations, including along the Canada Line Station, the Vancouver International Airport and in East Richmond."

"Public safety is of paramount concern for all Richmond residents, and investing in the police force could not come at a better time," said Ilich, MLA for Richmond Centre. "Meanwhile an additional Integrated Homicide Team member and crime analyst position will allow the City to strategically deploy its public safety resources most effectively."

"I am pleased to see the City has used this year's grant to establish a new RCMP Bike Squad consisting of 8 police officers and several auxiliary members," said Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. "I also applaud Council in its decision to establish a Domestic Violence Intervention Program. These programs, combined with other public safety initiatives and an increased number of police officers, help address the concerns of the entire Richmond community."

Municipalities all across British Columbia continue to enhance their policing and build on community-based public safety programs, thanks to the province's traffic fine revenue share funding. This year the Province returned $58.8 million in traffic fine revenues. The funding has allowed municipalities to explore a wide range of projects including outreach services for youth, Aboriginal policing initiatives and methamphetamine awareness programs. The funding has also meant that 70 municipalities across British Columbia have been able to hire more police officers.

This grant program assists municipalities that directly pay police enforcement costs. The provincial traffic fine revenue comes from ticket fines and court-imposed fines on violation tickets and the amount of money a municipality receives is based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs.

Since 2004 the Province has returned 100 per cent of traffic fine revenues to municipalities for a total of $199.8 million. To view reports from municipalities on how they are spending those funds, please

PALLA REAL ESTATE PERSPECTIVE: Should you list your home for sale over the holiday season? The benefit is there are fewer homes listed, so you will have better exposure; buyers are more serious; tasteful Christmas decorations give the home a warm feeling; and, the closing date can be set for January. The downside to having your home on the market over the holidays is that you are busy; it is inconvenient; there are a smaller number of buyers looking; poor weather keeps people from venturing out; and, realtors are often on vacation.

Whether you decide to sell your home now or after the holidays, Karel Palla has the professional experience to customize a marketing strategy tailored to your specific needs to get your home sold. Visit www.stevestonhouses-condos.com for a full listing of all houses, townhouses and condos available in Steveston. REFLECTIONS GASTRONOMY - - Reflections Gastronomie restaurant or as my wife, Ella and I like to refer to it as simply “RG”, has now been running for 8 months.

As most people already know, we have a successful catering company, Fired Up Events and Catering, and decided to venture out to open a restaurant. This project has really been a test of our skills in all areas of a business and let me say how hard this test has been.
I have been a chef for 14 years, cooking locally and internationally and mostly in hotels so my kitchen experience is varied and extensive and operating a catering company has also given me proven skills to run a business, but opening a restaurant has been very different.

These last 8 months we have seen our business grow slow and steady, offering peaks and valleys through different times of the months and we have made an effort to listen to our guests, clients, and associates to hear exactly what their comfort levels are with things like, menu prices, atmosphere, service, and options offered.
As a result of the combination of ideas offered we have grown to another level, changing some aspect of our restaurant to still stay with our concept and ideas but using the advice of our customers.

On November 1st we have introduced a winter menu where we have expanded it and offer the same quality of ingredients using local, seasonal, sustainable products, which our chefs of unparallel skill level use to create the dishes.

The mezzanine level that we refer to as the Epicurean loft, will be transformed into a wine bar/lounge where our nibble and bites menu will be available. You will also notice our brunch menu that is offered on the weekends from 10am-2pm.

“RG”, is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Richmond, and currently phone calls are coming in from customers who would like to utilize this space for their private functions, right into the New Year for Valentines, Easter, and other personal events.

Please feel free to call us at anytime to come down to discuss how we can help you or simply make a reservation for dinner and check out our website for more details.

Ella and I want to thank everyone who has supported us over the past 8 months and look forward to seeing you often in the future and for those people that have not tried our restaurant yet; we look forward to you becoming our regulars.

Hello to all and happy holidays,

I invite everyone to come and join us at Reflections Gastronomie “RG”, on December 4th to experience the flavors of a traditional Jewish Chanukah – the festival of lights- dinner.
If you have never enjoyed the company of a Jewish family where a gracious invitation to dine is considered to be a “ mitzvah” or a good deed in sharing the wealth of food and the spirit of a good company with perfect strangers, I encourage you to make reservations for this evening.

All the guests will be seated at a long dinner table, sharing the goodness of the meal from share platters that will be placed on the table.

My wife Ella and I look forward to dining with you on December 4th on the first night of Chanukah when we will also be making a blessing on lighting of the first light on the menorah.

The Menorah lighting will take place at 6:30pm and dinner will be served at 7pm.

By Reservations only!!- please call with any questions about that evening.
