Steveston's History Highlighted Through BC150 Grant, Says Yap

STEVESTON - The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site has received a grant from the Pride in Our Communities, BC150 Years Local Museums program to produce a children's book about the cannery, announced MLA John Yap.

"The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is an integral part of the story of Steveston, and a perfect example of the kind of culture and history we are highlighting throughout 2008 as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of B.C.'s founding as a Crown Colony," said Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. "The Gulf of Georgia Cannery celebrates our West Coast fishing heritage, and the book this grant supports will help us share that heritage with a new generation of residents and visitors."

The $4,700 grant will go towards production of a book - "My Monster Cannery Adventure" - a richly illustrated children's book which follows a 10-year-old boy around 1903 Steveston and its canneries.

The Province of B.C. and The British Columbia Museums Association (BCMA) have announced the recipients for the Pride in Our Communities grants program that will be helping 39 organizations in communities throughout the province highlight their history as part of the BC150 Years celebrations.

The $350,000 grant program was created to help B.C.'s local museums and heritage organizations plan special exhibits and events to commemorate BC150 Years. Each project will be featured in 2008 as part of the BC150 Years celebrations, and will become a permanent part of each organization's collection. As well, local museums and heritage organizations will be able to leverage this funding to create projects totaling more than $1.6 million.
BC150 Years is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community in B.C. is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.'s cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement. For more information on BC150 Years events and programs, please visit www.bc150.gov.bc.ca.

The BC150 Years Pride in Our Communities heritage and museums program is administered by The British Columbia Museums Association. For more information on The British Columbia Museums Association, visit www.museumsassn.bc.ca.

KOPIO KOFFEE

Hello Sue, Please pass this along!!
Five years and nine months ago a small coffee shop opened on the pier in Steveston. Indoor seating for 10 but with the best view that Steveston has to offer. Many dogs led their owners there to get the coveted biscuit. Many tiny grandkids also led their way to the location to say hello to master barista Tom. The end of September marked its closure. It was an overwhelming event. Approximately 300 regular customers showed up on that last weekend bearing not only good wishes, but cards, flowers, presents, hugs and tears. Without doubt they honoured our deep commitment to the community and for that we express our gratitude.

Regards and thank you to all of you,
Tom and Carole

PALLA REAL ESTATE PERSPECTIVE: Should you list your home for sale over the holiday season? The benefit is there are fewer homes listed, so you will have better exposure; buyers are more serious; tasteful Christmas decorations give the home a warm feeling; and, the closing date can be set for January. The downside to having your home on the market over the holidays is that you are busy; it is inconvenient; there are a smaller number of buyers looking; poor weather keeps people from venturing out; and, realtors are often on vacation.

Whether you decide to sell your home now or after the holidays, Karel Palla has the professional experience to customize a marketing strategy tailored to your specific needs to get your home sold. Visit www.stevestonhouses-condos.com for a full listing of all houses, townhouses and condos available in Steveston. Call Karel Palla of RE/MAX Select Properties at 604.329.1430 or email kpalla@kpalla.com for questions & viewings. He would be happy to help you!

Pleadis Astrological readings acknowledge our "spirit" that emanates our being, as we all are born as an integral part of this universe. Greater understanding can be imparted with Natal Birth chart readings that are the foundation to comprehend current cycles of manifesting in our lives.

Attached photo from the “Boom” event at the Bay Richmond in September, where they needed an astrologer as part of the retrospective of the 70’s … Katherine (Left) did 30 minute readings based on birthdate alone straight off the computer … worked well. Good to figure that out for events like fairs, parties etc. She was also interviewed by a DJ from Fox radio from the 70’s too, so got to wax poetic about the age of Aquarius and how we are all part of this universe … fun fun!
