Irish Pub Nights every Tuesday in the Buck & Ear. We have traditional Irish sessions performed by "The Irish Wakers" 7:30-10:30, performance by the Eire Born Irish Dancer on Oct. 2, and traditional Irish pub fare specials. Last Tuesday was our first go at it and the night was a huge success! Come down for a relaxing night of entertainment and great food! The Irish Wakers take requests!

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program

Bob Aldcorn is facilitating a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program on Sunday evenings from 7-9:30 PM at the Turning Point Wellness Center. This 8- week course is modeled after Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s program at the University of Massachusetts. Medical School. The central focus of this program is to learn how to use our natural human capacities and abilities to respond more effectively to stress, pain and illness through mindfulness meditation and light stretching.

Mindful Meditation is a type of meditation that essentially involves focusing your mind on the present. To be mindful is to be aware of your thoughts and actions in the present without judging yourself. This type of meditation may even improve mood, decrease stress, and boost immune function.

Meditation, and especially mindful meditation, is not throwing a switch and capitulating yourself anywhere, nor is it entertaining certain thoughts and getting rid of others. Nor is it making your mind blank or willing yourself to be peaceful or relaxed. It is really an inward gesture that inclines the heart and mind toward a full spectrum awareness of the present moment just as it is, accepting whatever is happening simply because it is already happening. This is hard work, especially when what is happening does not conform to our expectations, desires, and fantasies.

Bob Aldcorn has received a Certificate in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in Mind-Body Medicine under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr Saki Santorelli from the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, UMASS Medical School. Bob has also completed a 92- hour teacher development intensive training taught by senior staff from the Center for Mindfulness.

Classes are on Sunday evenings from 7- 9:30 PM starting October 14 through December 9, 2007. The exception is Sunday Nov.25 will be full day silent retreat from 9:30 AM to 5PM. The October 14th session is a free orientation.

Countdown to Rivermania and BC150 Begins

STEVESTON - One year from today, a flotilla of boats will be arriving at the mouth of the Fraser River as Steveston plays host to one of the flagship events celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia. The event, dubbed Rivermania, begins in August, 2008, with the flotilla travelling down the Fraser River and stopping at communities along the way to honour the Fraser River and its Peoples. As well as marking 150 years since B.C.'s founding as a colony, it will also recognize the 200th anniversary of Simon Fraser's exploration of the Fraser River.

"The Fraser River has played an important role in the development of our province for hundreds of years, and is an enduring symbol of British Columbia. That's why Rivermania is one of the flagship celebrations happening in 2008 to mark BC150," said Yap, MLA for Richmond Steveston.
"This one-of-a-kind event will be an incredible opportunity for residents to come out and celebrate the 150 years of B.C.'s history, and to reflect on the opportunities as our province and its people continue to grow and discover new opportunities over the next 150 years."

The boats will leave Prince George on August 24 and will arrive in Steveston on September 28, which is also B.C. Rivers Day. The flotilla will stop in river communities, where Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members will together honour the Fraser River and celebrate local history and culture.

The current list of participating communities includes Prince George, Quesnel, Soda Creek, Williams Lake, Lillooet, Lytton, Boston Bar, Yale, Hope, Mission, Harrison Hot springs, Sto'lo, Abbotsford, Fort Langley, New Westminster, Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, Surrey, Delta, and Steveston..

"Rivermania is a celebration of the culture, the history, and the people of communities all along the length of the Fraser River," said Georgia Katz, Rivermania organizer and Richmond resident. "It is also an opportunity to draw more tourism and drive economic growth in communities like Steveston."
