Candidly Speaking, April 2008

There’s Something New in the Neighborhood

Next month the inaugural Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market debuts in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery parking lot off Chatham Street. Sunday, May 4th 11:00 – 4:00 pm is the date and time to mark on your calendar. Gather up your family and friends and bring them to visit the local sights, walk the boardwalk and the dyke trails, visit the fish docks, stop in at the various heritage sites and drop in on the vendors at the farmers market.

This is an idea whose time has come. Under the careful guidance of Leisa Yee and the volunteers, the seed of an idea to have a local, family-oriented market took root. Along the way it was nurtured with care and has now grown into a reality. The fruits are about to be harvested. The open-air format is modeled after successful markets in our surrounding communities of Ladner, Coquitlam, White Rock and Whistler to name a few, It will be a place to bring the family, take in the ambience of Steveston, and explore the goods and wares of our artisans and food producers. Vendors from across our province will be in attendance.

In celebration of our diverse community the first market day of every month will highlight a different culture. Richmond’s weekly market will celebrate and showcase our agricultural and cultural heritage as well as healthy eating and community building.

The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market will be held every Sunday starting at the beginning of May and culminating on September 28. This date (September 28) is also the day Rivermania will arrive in Steveston.

See you at the Market!

Community Funding Boosts Local Pride for BC150 Celebrations

RICHMOND - Local groups and organizations in Richmond have received BC150 Community Funding grants totalling $40,000, announced Richmond MLAs Olga Ilich, Linda Reid and John Yap.

"Richmond has a strong marine history which will be highlighted this year in celebration of B.C.'s 150th anniversary," said Ilich, MLA for Richmond Centre. "I'm pleased to see the amount of support being given to events in the area."

"Our province and city have a fascinating story to tell - from the rich, ancient culture of our First Nations, to our explorers and homesteaders, to visionaries of the modern day," said Reid, MLA for Richmond East.

"BC150 events help ensure every British Columbian has an opportunity to learn, share and celebrate what it means to be a part of our proud heritage."

"This funding will help us showcase the unique heritage and multiculturalism of our Richmond community," said Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. "These events are wonderful opportunities for residents and visitors to come together, celebrate and discover the diversity of B.C., the Best Place on Earth."

The province is providing the following funding to support BC150 events in Richmond:

* $15,000 for the fifth annual Richmond Maritime Festival, which highlights the vessels and the traditions of nautical history (August 15-17, 2008).

* $25,000 for Rivermania, BC150's flagship event spotlighting the Fraser River and the people/communities on it (September 28, 2008).

Funding through the BC150 Community Funding Program will support 128 events in communities across B.C. From festivals and country fairs to art exhibitions and historical presentations, a wide-range of celebrations will take place throughout 2008.
Through 2010 Legacies Now, Spirit of BC Community Committees worked with community leaders and event hosts to develop plans for local BC150 celebrations. BC150 Community Funding Program projects support the BC150 pillars of: Heritage, communities, multiculturalism, Aboriginals, and arts and culture and reflect the unique nature of each British Columbia community.

BC150 is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community in B.C. is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.'s cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement. For more information on BC150 programs and events, visit www.BC150.ca.

ASK A PHYSIOTHERAPIST – Greg Cassap
WHAT IS ACHILLES TENDONITIS?

Achilles Tendon
 thickest tendon in body and very strong
 attaches calf muscles to heel bone
 covered by sheath that lubricates tendon

Achilles Tendonitis
 when cold, increased viscosity of lubricant within sheath reduces lubricating properties
 friction of repetitive movement of tendon within sheath, especially during cold weather or in absence of warm-up prior to intense activity, may provoke inflammation within tendon
 crepitus, a crackling sensation, may be felt as inflamed surfaces interact with movement
 chafing of tendon against sheath causes thickening of opposing tissues
 nodule, often found at level of top of shoe heel cup, may form in tendon due to friction irritation
Physical Therapy Treatment

 application of electrotherapeutic modalities
 vigorous massage of tendon and calf muscles may be indicated
 icing (ice acute injury for at least 48 hours and continue to ice if swelling persists)
 stretching (most effective following short warm up and immediately after activity or sport) and strengthening exercises are demonstrated and assigned as home routine
 heel lifts are used to facilitate return to activity and may be removed after pain has abated
 custom-fabricated orthotic (insole) or
prescription shoes or sandals may be prescribed to remedy faulty foot-ankle biomechanics
 use of taping may help in situations in which physical demands of resumed activity are high and/or rapid return to activity is necessary
 splint may be used to keep tendon on stretch overnight
 conditioning and functional re-training activities are assigned if normal routine of daily living has been negatively
Other Treatments

 your physician may prescribe oral or topical anti-inflammatory (ultrasound may assist in absorption and dispersion of topically applied anti-inflammatory medication)
 Prolotherapy, an injection directly into tendon, is occasionally employed by physician to cause thickened tissue to shrink
 Lithotripsy, pulsed high intensity ultrasound waves (also used to break up kidney stones) may be indicated if problem is persistent
 surgical debridement of severe scar tissue is very occasionally indicated and may be considered a last resort
 cortisone injection is employed only with extreme caution as incidence of spontaneous rupture following injection is high
Prognosis

 condition can severely limit activity level of sufferer and where there is marked amount of pain activity level should, in fact, be reduced as much as possible
 ballistic activities such as tennis, squash, and running are most affected
 condition responds well to treatment with mild cases requiring four or five sessions to resolve
 generally, larger swelling indicates longer recovery period
 pain-free nodules may not necessitate reduction in level of activity
 check with therapist for suggestions for safe and effective gradual return to activity as overly-ambitious return to activity may cause relapse

Physio Note: Footwear Running shoes with worn-out
soles may subject tendon to prolonged excessive stretch
Examine your running shoes periodically for degree and pattern of wear and correct alignment. Your physical therapist can help you select appropriate footwear and recognize footwear faults

PANGAEA CLINIC OF NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Conference Dates: both Dr Ward and Dr Chan will be away from the office Friday April 4 th , Saturday April 6 th for the Northwest Naturopathic Physician's Conference. Unfortunately, no treatments, including sauna detoxification, can be done on these days as there will be no medical supervision.

It is a 3 day conference, and will cover the following topics:
• naturopathic medicines in a pandemic influenza situation
• clinical nutrition
• environmental medicine and detoxification
• core sciences/therapeutics: pharmacology, manipulation, anti-aging, hydrotherapy, women's medicine, herbal medicine, pediatrics
Web site Updates:
Pages on pancreatic, breast, and gastric cancer have been added. Dr Chan has started a blog page that is accessible from the main page, or at www.drericchan.wordpress.com
Recent blog articles have included:
Effects of mercury http://drericchan.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/more-on-mercury-in-adults/
Toxic salmon http://drericchan.wordpress.com/2008/03/13/the-best-dietary-source-of-pcbs-is/
Youtube videos on chelation and ozone http://drericchan.wordpress.com/2008/03/07/videos-on-ozone-therapy-and-chelation-therapy/
If you'd like to receive these blog posts by email, sign up at this site: http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=1480523&loc=en_US
Treatment Updates:
1. Allergy season!
Dr Ward continues her focus on Environmental Medicine, treating with great success allergy, sensitivity, and immunology. With allergy season coming up, now is the time for any current patients or friends and family of patients who are interested in a natural way of identifying triggers and treating the underlying causes for their allergies. This extends beyond seasonal hay fever to chemical sensitivies, asthma, eczema, etc, to even autoimmune disease.

The search for triggers can involve:

•allergy testing (skin, blood, in-office provocation of symptoms with allergen challenge and subsequent neutralization of symptoms with diluted allergen)
•heavy metal testing

If you or someone you know may benefit from Dr Ward's expertise of allergy, sensitivity, and immunology, please call the office to book an appointment with her.

2. Fat loss!
Dr Chan has reintroduced mesotherapy. This treatment is extremely successful for treating and “sculpting” away pockets of fat, particularly saddle-bags on the thigh and love handles on the abdomen. It only works if the patient is already moderately thin or has localized pockets of fat, as the medicine (soy lecithin, phosphatidyl choline) is more effective if distributed into a smaller area. Up to two areas can be treated per session, at a cost of $180 per area. Since mesotherapy is most effective if the areas of fat are small, please call the office set up a complimentary screening if you are interested; just ask to book a “mesotherapy screening.”
3. Detoxification program
Many patients ask about doing a general detoxification at this time of the year as part of a preventative program. Usually this is a very good idea, although ideally natural detoxification is something that should be stimulated year-round. Once a year we can always kick start the process as well.

Our general detoxification program involves a semi-estrictive, low allergenicity diet, combined with sauna detoxification, hydrotherapy, and IV vitamin C.
It is a 2 week program that involves:
• 10 sauna sessions (60 minute)
• 10 hydrotherapy sessions post-sauna (20 min)
• 5 IV vitamin C sessions post-sauna
Occasionally, a challenge for metal toxicity can be done s well. This involves a pre and post chelation urine test. This is usually done if the patient is particularly chemically sensitive, allergic, or simply to determine if metal retention may be a problem. The pre chelation urine test gives a baseline for what your body is excreting, and then the post chelation urine test shows if there is an elevated body burden in the tissues that is not being excreted to a reasonable degree.

Thanks for reading, and please take note of the upcoming conference dates next week!
