REALTORS® luncheon nets record donation for local charity

RICHMOND, BC: -- February 15, 2008 -- The Richmond/South Delta division of the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board, in partnership with several individual REALTORS®, many local real estate offices and a multitude of committed sponsors, were hard at work over the holidays raising a record $8,492.73 for the Richmond Carefree Society at the REALTORS® annual Christmas luncheon. This year’s donation is the largest the non-profit organization has ever received.

“We would have never been able to achieve this level of success without the continued support of local real estate offices and several-dozen dedicated, long-term sponsors,” said Deb Robson, Vice-President of the Richmond/South Delta division.

The funds will be put toward adapted playground equipment for Richmond children with special needs. This is the fifth year the Richmond/South Delta division of the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board has supported the Richmond Carefree Society.

For 38 years the Richmond Carefree Society has run a playgroup for children with special needs or who otherwise require respite. Carefree is funded solely by private donations and grants.

He was a classically trained sculptor who worked in stone and bronze and then graduated to cor-ten and stainless steels, combining alabaster, marble and granite to create enormous sculptures such as SEPTEMBER 11TH MEMORIAL” (2006).

His most impressive work was “dedicated to the 343 fallen firefighters who responded to the New York World Trade center’s call for assistance on September 11, 2001 and lost their lives in the dedication of their duties”. Alberto created the “twin towers” of nine-foot-tall granite as stand-ins of the glass and steel of the World Trade Center structures, a
permanent installation at the State Fire Marshal Building, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA

Alberto liked the Russian Constructivists, especially Tatlin. One of the main influences behind his move towards public, landscape work, the move towards “architectural”
pieces, was the work of Osamu Noguchi. Alberto’s work is also reflective of British Sculptor Anthony Caro. HARMONY (1998) is a well known permanent Installation located at the Richmond Financial Centre. In 2000, as part of an artist’s symposium, Alberto invited 5 sculptors to create PORTALS OF THE FUTURE. The resulting pieces are now located on the north dyke River Road at the 2010
Olympic site. MULTIPLES OF THREE (2002), a 90 foot long Cor-Ten steel landscape sculpture graces the Fleetwood Booster Pump Station, in Surrey BC.

In his latest work we find discarded industrial artifacts combined with geometric stone and wood shapes. Many of these pieces, unfinished, are still in his Steveston studio.“We want to find a public space in STEVESTON for his sculptures, he was in the process of securing a site, and for the last two years has been working to finish SOPHIA, the stone and steel work that stands 15 feet tall in his outdoor studio in the marine scrap yard” says student and local artist, Erika Koenig-Workman. SOPHIA is constructed from steel, stone, and marine parts that
