HEIRLOOM FILMS

To produce 100 family history films in 10 years. Filmmaker Cory Bretz sets goal of helping 10 families create legacy videos each year.

Heirloom Films owner Cory Bretz recently announced an ambitious target to help 100 families preserve their family identity and stories in digital video over the next 10 years. Bretz has been producing custom films for local families around Greater Vancouver since 1998, as well as creating videos for memorials, tributes, weddings, events, and corporate functions. With family films, his focus is on capturing the life stories, wisdom, and personal messages of the elders of families. “The grandmothers and grandfathers of our families have important information in their heads and hearts that can so easily be lost forever. As our eldest generations dwindle, we risk losing the history of our families, the sense of who we are and where we came from.”

Bretz has set a goal of producing 100 family history films and life story biography videos over the next 10 years. “It’s only a drop in the bucket but a lucky few of the next generation will be watching their great grandparents on TV, telling the family story and passing on the values that kept the family together.”

Capturing family stories and storing videotaped interviews of seniors on DVD is a relatively new phenomenon but with television becoming pervasive in almost every facet of our lives, Bretz says it’s essential that real families exist there too. At a screening of one of Bretz’s latest films about a recently deceased 80-year-old grandmother, the audience was visibly moved. “There were lots of tears - tears of joy. The film helped them remember her beauty and why they loved her so much. They learned things about her that would’ve been lost forever if not recorded with video.”

Cory Bretz lives in Richmond, BC and is an accredited member of the BC Professional Videographers Association (www.bcpva.com). For groups and families, Bretz offers a free one-hour presentation “The Movie About You” that explains the various considerations around making a meaningful family history film. For more information about 100 family films visit www.heirloomfilms.ca or call 604-275-4900.

Hi Everyone! My name is Randy

I have a property management company here in Steveston which has specialized in managing small properties like individual apartments, houses, and apartment blocks for more than 30 years. Last year the City of Richmond and all the other surrounding municipalities followed Surrey's example of downloading the costs incurred by the city to deal with illegal drugs ie. Grow-ops and crystal met labs directly on to the Owner! This could easily cost $20,000.00 or more! Now we all know that we already pay for policing, fire departments, city inspectors of various kinds, etc. etc. in our property taxes! The city in its wisdom is saying the costs of dealing with illegal drugs are rising and they need to recover their costs and the logical target is the Owner of the property. Well everyone knows that those irresponsible people known as tenants are the real problem as Owners themselves are responsible people - they wouldn't consider a grow-op in their home! If you really believe all this to be a fair statement about Owners versus Tenants then please stop reading now. In 30 years of managing properties, I have encountered four grow-ops and no met labs! It is true that we screen our tenants carefully but that is not a guarantee that something won't change in their lives down the road that might tempt them to make extra tax free cash. So the point of this message from me is that the only way you can avoid the possibility of a $20,000.00 bill from your city should the worst occur is to do regular (three months maximum and vary the times) inspections which are in writing detailing what you did and what you saw. I also have the tenant sign my inspection reports so there is no doubt about whether they were done or not. You will find this difficult. Tenants don't want their privacy obstructed. Some declare they will move out! Let them! I have had two in the last year but the cost of replacing them was nothing compared to the alternative. Also you may feel uncomfortable, or worry about your own safety. This is a real possibility. I recently crossed into the USA and a border guard ask me if I really did these inspections because of the signs on my vehicle saying I did. I said I do and asked why he asked? His reply was sobering - even though he was wearing a bullet proof vest, had a gun, and whatever else - he said "I wouldn't do that"! I think this says something about Canada that makes me feel glad I live here. So if you want to keep the city off your back and your bank account; call me. As a licensed property manager, you can believe I don't want to be sued by an angry Owner for a $ 20,000.00 bill! I do drug inspections and you and your property are safe! My company is Randall C. Lewis Company Ltd. My e-mail address for your welcome comments is randy_lewis@shaw.ca and my web site is propertymgmt.com. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and no matter who looks after your properties - make sure they do regular inspections in writing!

Dear Art Lovers and Artists,
5.3 MILLION FOR ART IN THE NEW SPEED SKATING OVAL!

Some great news! The Richmond Oval Art Plan was unveiled to City Council recently and it contains an exciting artistic vision. The plan was created with input by the City of Richmond, the Richmond Public Art Commission, the Musqueam Nation Band , the Richmond Speed Skating Oval Building Committee and the Cannon Design Team.

We invite you to come to Richmond City Hall this Tuesday night at 7pm to see a presentation of the plan and show council you support public art! The plan is absolutely amazing and you definitely will not want to miss this event. When the plan was originally presented to council, 3 members of council were in opposition. As arts supporters and artists of all disciplines, let’s show Richmond City Council that we support an artistic legacy for Richmond and that we are passionate about the future of art in this city.

Mark your calendars for this Tuesday nite, May 23, at 7pm at Richmond City Hall Don’t forget to invite all your friends!

NEW RICHMOND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS, ARTS AND CULTURE COMMITTEE

The new Business, Arts and Culture Committee met for the first time today at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce. The roots of the committee go back to the RCC Arts and Culture Task Force which created a report in April 2006 outlining Benefits, Opportunities and Recommendations for Linkages between Business, Arts and Culture in Richmond. The Task Force (now disbanded as the mandate was achieved) was created as a result of a need identified in the Richmond Arts Strategy of 2004.

The bottom line is we will be working towards having a scan funded which will create the framework of information required to create the linkages between arts , culture and business in Richmond.

We know instinctively that artists contribute to the livability of a community, attract business, contribute to the business bottom line with increased local and tourist traffic and elevate our spirits. The fact is, that in order to educate others we need this document with hard facts!

The RCC Business, Arts and Culture Committee will be meeting once a month and the members are

THEATRE REVIEW OF ‘THE GULL’

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for opening night of the Pangaea Arts production of Daphne Marlatt’s ‘The Gull- the Steveston Noh Project. 150 of us sat in a tent on the grounds of Richmond City Hall and were treated to the world premiere of a Japanese/English fusion presentation of Noh theatre.

Noh is a living art form over six hundred years old. Main characters may wear a mask and movements are highly stylized. Music- drums, Japanese flute and chanting play an important role in the production.

This story was of two young brothers, both fishermen who return to their old fishing grounds after the second world war. Their father and mother have both passed away- their mother after a lengthy illness and a longing to return to Japan to escape the hardships of internment.
The play opened with the two brothers singing about where they had fished. I had taken my mother to see the play as her father (my grandfather) was a fisherman , born in Steveston. My mother and I were both crying minutes into the production as it was so beautiful and the connection to the brothers and fishing so strong.

The Gull was a visual and aural feast- it played for 4 days only but if it ever comes ‘round again I urge you to see it. You will not be disappointed. What a great way to bridge the Japanese and Canadian culture and what a wonderful way to use the plaza at Richmond City Hall. I hope to see many more productions under the ‘big tent’ there!

I HOPE TO SEE YOU TUESDAY NITE AT CITY HALL IN SUPPORT OF THE RICHMOND OVAL ART PLAN AT 7PM!

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS EFFECTIVE
IMMEDIATELY- tfisher@can.rogers.com or tamaka@stevestonvillagegallery.com
