YAP SAYS PROVINCE TO ASSIST COMMUNITY IN BATTLE AGAINST CRYSTAL METH

Richmond - Premier Gordon Campbell's announcement providing $7 million in funding for crystal meth initiatives will mean increased support for efforts to fight the drug in Richmond, says John Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston.

"This funding is a very positive development for Richmond, where authorities and officials will be able to take advantage of the funding made available to combat this deadly drug," says Yap. "The financial support from the government shows our commitment to tackling this problem."

New initiatives to fight crystal meth announced include:

* $2 million for the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) to help communities fight crystal meth by providing $10,000 seed grants to every community in the province that wants to participate and similar community-level programs for First Nations.

* $3 million in the next year on a major public awareness campaign to educate parents, youth and other on what the drug does to those who fall prey to its destructive powers, and signs of crystal meth use. $1 million will go to school-based initiatives and $2 million on a public advertising campaign.

* $2 million for targeted treatment programs.

* Regional seminars organized by the Solicitor General to inform communities about the dangers of crystal meth, and stopping its spread.

The announcement, which was made at the UBCM conference Thursday in Vancouver, is in addition to initiatives and strategies already underway. The B.C. Government spends over $1 billion annually on mental health and addictions services.

"This drug is a serious threat to our community, our families and our children," says Yap. "I look forward to being involved with local efforts to battle this scourge."
