RICHMOND TO BE PART OF NEW BYLAW DISPUTE SYSTEM, SAYS YAP

Richmond - Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap is pleased to hear Richmond will be part of a new bylaw dispute system introduced by the provincial government.

"Instead of going to court to settle disputes about such matters as parking tickets, local residents now have a new option," Yap said. "I am pleased that Richmond was selected to be a part of this new process that is expected to free up the courts' time to pursue more serious matters."

Previously, the only available option to dispute tickets was in provincial court. If no agreement is able to be reached with the municipal screening officer, the matter will then go to an independent adjudicator chosen from a list approved by the Attorney General.

Five other B.C. communities are going to use the new system. Program implementation will vary by each community starting this fall. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Attorney General at the Union of BC Municipalities convention.

YAP PROMOTES RICHMOND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY IN LEGISLATURE

Victoria - Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap promoted plans for a new 50-unit assisted living facility in Richmond in the Legislative Assembly this week.

The complex is a joint project between Richmond Health Services, BC Housing and S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

"Construction is expected to begin on this project next year and seniors will be able to move into the Austin Harris site in 2007," Yap said Thursday in the Legislature. "The facility will contain all of the amenities to make seniors feel comfortable; they include a dining room, library, outdoor patio, garden, Internet and multipurpose room."

Yap said this is a project that Lillian To was involved in before she passed away in July. To was also instrumental in establishing S.U.C.C.E.S.S., the Lower Mainland agency that assists new immigrants integrate into Canadian society.

The preliminary cost of the project is $14.4 million

"This is part of the B.C. Government's commitment of 5,000 long term care beds for seniors by 2008," said Yap. "My constituents are very pleased that this facility will be constructed in my riding as it will bring affordable housing and care options for low income seniors."
