Tall Ship coin from Royal Canadian Mint by our own John Horton

Hot off the press - a new coin from the Royal Canadian Mint has one of John Horton's images on it. It was just recently released and is one of a series of tall ship coins produced by them. The coin is limited to a production of 16,000 and not a circulation coin, but a collector’s coin. It is packaged in an attractive maroon display holder. Purchase one for your collection.

Go to the web site listed below and you will be able to see the coin. The sky is a hologram and for those of you who have not seen a hologram coin this is a very stunning coin. And quite large too.

You can order the coin directly from the Canadian Mint, or, better still, support the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society which operates the National Historic Site by purchasing the coin from their gift shop - which is open 7 days a week.

POSTCARDS FROM HOME

Presentation, Workshop & Exhibition, A shared reflection on our place within the city of Richmond, Celebrate Family Week at the Richmond Museum

Sunday, October 1st, 2006 - 2:00 - 4:00pm.

What are our stories and how are we to trace our histories and identity in this place called Richmond?

Richmond is both a geographic site and a home to many families. The focus of this event is to begin a process of community involvement through the sharing of our sense of place in Richmond as new and/or long term immigrants.

The Presentation
A highlight of the event will be a presentation from the UBC Rich Gate Project - eight Richmond families who share stories of how they have made Richmond their home. The Rich Gate Project documents the research journey of these families as they connect artistically to Richmond.

The Workshop
The public are invited to bring to the event their own family photos - particularly, photos that situate them within the city of Richmond from current to more historical times. Starting with these images, we will share further stories of Richmond as home and begin building a community display as part of a Postcards From Home Exhibit. At the event workshop families are invited to create their own postcards, by photocopying their photos and using other image-making techniques, and to write a story to share with the public on the back of the card.

The Exhibit
All cards and stories will be displayed in the Cultural Centre Rotunda Gallery during Heritage Week and throughout February 2007 in an exhibit entitled Postcards From Home.
Free family program! All ages welcome!

This program is made possible through the support of the City of Richmond, Richmond Museum Society, Richmond Children First and UBC Faculty of Education.

VOLUNTEER RICHMOND INFORMATION SERVICES

Volunteer Richmond Information Services has been in Richmond for over 30 years. We have some upcoming events that we would like to showcase: We realise that space is limited, and I have included more information here for you to take a look at, please include information you see fit for the newsletter and maybe we can talk whether or not it is possible to include a Volunteers Needed section or upcoming agency events. The main events are : Volunteers are stars awards, Richmond Christmas Fund, Letting community members know where to find information through our Information and Referral services, and Volunteers Needed for various programmes.

All information can be found on our website at www.volunteerrichmond.ca or you can call us at (604)279-7020. Thank you for taking the time to connect with us.

Volunteer Richmond Information Services is a non-profit, charitable organization that aims to bring people and services together by providing community information and encouraging volunteerism.

“Volunteers Are Stars” Gala Dinner and Awards - December 6, 2006
Nominate Richmond individuals and groups whose voluntary efforts make Richmond a better place, and join us for a special evening as we celebrate the stars in our community. Nominations are due no later than November 3, 2006.

Richmond Christmas Fund
Volunteer Richmond Information Services understands that not everyone is fortunate. Many families in Richmond live with only the barest of necessities. During the holiday season, financial pressures are particularly tough. Our Richmond Christmas Fund program mobilizes the community’s spirit of giving, through monetary donations and donations of new toys and other gifts for needy families.

Each year, the Fund distributes grocery vouchers to almost 3,000 low-income Richmond residents, over 1,000 children 15 years and younger receive gifts and stocking stuffers, ensuring that no child needs to return to school in January without a wonderful story to tell.

Information & Referral
Finding information and services can be frustrating; VRIS has staff and volunteers helping connect people with services. We distribute a wide variety of free brochures, pamphlets and guides through our office in the Richmond Caring Place and the Customer Care booth in Richmond Centre Mall.
You can access our Richmond Community Services Directory which contains information on services available to Richmond residents such as; counselling, health, housing, employment, education, recreation, sports, culture, etc. http://www.yourlibrary.ca/volunteerdb.cfm

Our “Ask Me” volunteers are stationed at Richmond Centre Mall behind customer care, answering questions and providing information about the community.

Volunteer Centre
Volunteer Richmond Information Services builds capacity in the Richmond non-profit sector by providing training opportunities for managers of volunteers, board members and direct service volunteers. Visit our website for upcoming trainings and workshops.

Volunteers Needed
ASK ME - Stationed at Richmond Centre next to the Customer Care booth and identifiable in their bright blue vests, Ask Me volunteers are a great source of information. They promote our city by giving tourists information on Richmond hotels, activities and attractions.

Agency Ambassadors - If you are passionate about volunteering and love public speaking, consider joining our agency ambassador program. We are looking for volunteers to give presentations about volunteering, community services and our agency to various community groups.

Seniors Shopping Program - Shop-by-Phone
For seniors and others who cannot get out to shop for their own groceries, volunteers fill orders placed over the phone. This much-needed service operates several mornings each week.

Group Shopping -Volunteers assist Richmond Health Services Continuing Health clients with weekly shopping for groceries and personal items at a local mall. Having coffee or lunch together completes the outing.

Child Care Resource and Referral
Resource Centre staff make over 5000 referrals to child care facilities each year, linking families with care centres, and responding to hundreds of general inquiries through the Family Information Line. Child Care Providers can borrow resources, activity boxes, start-up equipment and other materials for use with children in their programs.

Seniors Programs
Volunteer Richmond Information Services has various seniors programs such as Shopping Programs, Seniors Information and Referral and Senior Peer Counselling.

Leadership Richmond

Thanks to support from Coast Capital Savings, Volunteer Richmond Information Services is expanding its successful Leadership Now program into Leadership Richmond. Leadership Richmond includes four modules: Youth Now is designed to harness the leadership potential found in our community by training young adults, who are high school graduates and under the age of 26, to serve as board members for local non-profit organizations. It also provides an opportunity for non profit organizations to strengthen their boards through the infusion of younger community leaders.
Third Age Leadership will help volunteer organizations benefit from the skills and experience of adults 50+.
Enterprise Leadership will promote corporate volunteering and the transfer of business skills to the public sector.
Community Leadership will promote volunteerism and build community capacity through volunteer management training, workshops and information services.
