HAPPY CANADA DAY

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hello everyone,
As of July 1, I am officially retired. The Steveston Villager Business Directory, Steveston Community Website and this E-Newsletter are being taken over by a wonderful young couple, Peter and Lynette Chan, both LLB’s (Law Degrees) of Artico Communications Group Inc. They bring with them a wealth of years experience in marketing, communication, desktop and web design and will take this Trio of products to the next level.

Peter, his wife Lynette and young son are Richmondites and have the love and passion for Steveston that I was looking for. They are a warm, personable and caring couple and are the right fit for Steveston.

Please show them the support you have shown me all these years for these very special publications in Steveston. I will be hanging around for a while with help and support for Peter and Lynette, and to make this transition as smooth as possible.

I would like to thank all the businesses who have supported me and my family for the past 26 years working in Steveston. Without your continued support this Business Directory would have never become the great vehicle and success it has, for both businesses and residents. It will now, under new leadership, continue to grow and remain the leader in communication to the world through the website, with over 3.5 million visitors in 2009, and local visitors and residents though the Business Directory.

For now, it is business as usual at the Steveston Villager.
You will see me around on the streets chatting and shopping as usual. Steveston is It is my home, my passion and continues to be my love. I’m not gone, just retired!! If you need me, my new email is below.

Sincere regards,
Sue Girling, President

GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY PAST AND PRESENT

At the Gulf of Georgia Cannery from July 1st to 31st, Gulf of Georgia Cannery Past and Present is an exhibit of artwork from the members of the Canadian Artists Society who work in oil, acrylic and water colour. Inspired by the storied history of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, the Canadian Artists Society wants to increase awareness of the historic site.
As part of this project, the artists have held workshops with school children from Richmond, Mission, and Abbotsford to create artwork about the Cannery. Over 120 of the students’ paintings will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite paintings.
All the artwork exhibited is for sale and the Canadian Artists society is donating nine paintings for a silent auction that will be held for the duration of the exhibit. Proceeds from the auction will go to support the Cannery’s education programs.
The Canadian Artists Society is formed by ten Vancouver artists. Some have received numerous art awards and recognitions, others are aspiring and emerging artists who often gather together to paint either in a studio setting or plein-air. The artists in this group are Danny Chen, Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Hilda Chen, Teresa S.W. Chow, Annie Tsai, and Terry Wong who are all Active Members of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Others are Linda Burchill, Peter Daniels, Peter Wong, and Kent Wong.

THE COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF RICHMOND
AND THE

ARTISANS’ GALERIA

THE COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF RICHMOND AND ARTISANS’ GALLERIA IN DANGER OF CLOSING AFTER 40 YEARS!

The Community Arts Council of Richmond became a provincially and federally registered charity 40 years ago. It’s mandate was simple, to support and promote the arts, artisans and artists in Richmond.

During it’s 40-year history it was instrumental in advocating and raising funds to build the current Richmond Arts enter and Gateway Theatre in Richmond, issued grants to dozens of art groups, donated thousands for scholarships to young performing artists, held many free events in Richmond and spent its entire life following its mandate.

The CACR has made a difference in the lives of many people and groups
and is responsible for making Richmond the progressive “arts aware” city it is today.

Now it will have to close! Government cuts in funding to the arts has meant that it is next to impossible to access grant funds. As a result they have used their hard-earned savings to continue to operate and the money is running out.

They desperately need major sponsorship and donations in order to continue to operate.

The Artisans’ Galleria is a “one of kind “ gallery in Richmond. This is where they hold various events and exhibitions, which are always free to the public to view, as well as a location for local artists to display and sell their work, giving the public excellent quality at affordable prices. They do not make the normal markup, rather the larger portion goes to the artists, thereby helping to support and encourage them.It is “public art” in an enclosed environment and it will soon disappear without funding. The Artisans’ Galleria is proud to be a part of Steveston Village and brings many people to the village with their reputation and events. Their departure would leave a space that will never be filled.

So they are asking for the help of corporate and individual sponsors and donors and will issue a tax receipt for donations in excess of $20.00, and will give public recognition to any major sponsors or donors.

Imagine a world without colour, form and beauty. That is a world without art.

Visit their website at www.richmondartscouncil.org to see more of who they are and what they do. Call or visit the Galleria at 604-241-2790 to learn more and help them continue to support the arts and artists!
