Reopening May 6, 2006 ALMOST GONE: Remains of Cannery Villages Sat., May 06th at 1pm Artist Florence Debeugny launches her new provoking multi-media presentation of canneries along the coast of BC. Through interviews, music, poetry, sounds, amazing photographs and archival shots, Florence examines canneries and their disappearance from the historical landscape of BC. This project was assisted by the Spirit of BC Arts Fund and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society. "Almost Gone" will show in the Cannery's Boiler House Theatre at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm until October 9th. On opening day we will also have a display of salmon - themed artworks by artists Todd Horton and Aileen Penner.

CANFISCO: From Sea to Shelf Sat., June 24 , 1pm
Canfisco, Canadian fishing Company is 100 years old! This exhibit examines the marketing psychology behind selling fish – why have label designs changed, what can we learn about history from the marketing methods used and what did Walt Disney have to do with selling fish? Find the answers to all these questions and more. Exhibit runs until October 9th.

Dale Rassmussen
Singer-songwriter Dale Rasmussen will bring his soulful singing and musicianship to Steveston Folk for an evening of original songs and other gems that span a range of influences from jazz to contemporary roots/folk. Dale's voice is likened to Jesse Winchester and his guitar playing sparkles with evocative and beautifully constructed arrangements. His recent CD "Raven's Wing" has received great response and airplay, both locally and internationally, from B.C. to Pennsylvania to Belgium, and his recent appearances include the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Vancouver Island Music Fest and Harmony Arts Festival.

The Neverly Sisters
The Neverly Sisters, Ellen van der Hoeven and Karen Kelm, perform an eclectic mix of musical genres, from modern and traditional folk, swing and classic country to their own original songs. Ellen's grounding in traditional and contemporary folk music took shape in her many years with the folk trio, Three Strong Winds. Touring coffee houses and folk clubs throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, she supplied the lyrical top line for the group’s arrangements of songs about love, life, labour, and history. Karen's musical theatre and big band background makes for an unlikely vocal partnership. Her longstanding tenure with Vancouver's Preservation of Swing Band grounds her earthier vocals in jazz standards with a nod to classic country. Reaching back to her high school days when "nobody couldn’t play the guitar", she finds her folk roots and meets Ellen somewhere in the middle.

The London Heritage Farm is a 4.6-acre site overlooking the south arm of the Fraser River, offering a park-like setting with lovely flower gardens, the restored Spragg family barn, old farm equipment, chickens, and comforts such as picnic tables and public washrooms. The 1880's London farm house has been fully restored and furnished to illustrate rural life in Richmond. Six rooms display furniture, accessories, pictures, photographs, clothing, and quilts. The London Heritage Farm is owned by the City of Richmond and operated by the London Heritage Farm Society.

My name is Zully Avila, and I'm the Marketing Coordinator for a new 5K Walk / 10K Run that is taking place on the evening of Saturday, July 8th in Vancouver. It's called The Underwear Affair, it’s an event dedicated to uncover cures for cancers below the waist, and is benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation.

The City of Richmond’s Emergency Management Office is looking for residents of Steveston to participate in our upcoming Emergency Social Services (ESS) functional exercise at Steveston Community Centre, 4111 Moncton Street on Saturday, June 17, 2006.

The City currently has approximately 150 dedicated ESS volunteers that are being trained to assist individuals and families during a disaster. During a small or large scale emergency, ESS provides emergency food, clothing, lodging services and other basic necessities to people affected by the disaster.

The City’s ESS volunteers will be at Steveston Community Centre practicing their skills during a “mock” disaster. We are looking for people of all ages to come out to play the role of Richmond residents requiring personal assistance and information assistance following an earthquake that has devastated the lower mainland. This mock exercise will be from 10:30am to 1:30pm in the Community Centre’s Multi Purpose Room. Please note that all interested volunteers are asked to arrive at 10:00am in the Tyee Room for a 20 minute briefing session prior to the start of the exercise.

What is expected of you? At the 10:00am briefing session, you will be given instructions on what character you will be portraying and what services you require once the exercise begins. At 10:20am, when the exercise starts, you will be asked to go to the M.P.R. and basically act out your role and follow the instructions from the ESS volunteers. The process should take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

Refreshments will be served at the exercise and in addition, all volunteers that attend, will be eligible for some great door prizes.

THE JOY OF WORDS, AN EVENING OF READINGS AND MUSIC WITH AWARD-WINNING CANADIAN AUTHOR JOY KOGAWA

TLC The Land Conservancy of British Columbia is pleased to host an evening of readings and music with internationally recognized author Joy Kogawa on Tuesday, April 25, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Kogawa will read from her first novel, Obasan, recently re-released as a Penguin Classic. Along with Joy, special celebrity guests, including well-loved actors Joy Coghill, Doris Chilcott, and Bill Dow, along with CBC Radio One host Sheryl McKay and other special guests, will read favourite selections from BC prose and poetry.
Japanese Canadian actors Minami Hara, Hiro Kanagawa and Maiko Yamamoto will read from the libretto for Naomi's Road, the opera based on Joy Kogawa's children's novel. Jazz gospel singer Leore Cashe will also perform.

Kogawa's Obasan, published in 1981, describes through the eyes of a young girl the life of her family before, during and after the Japanese Canadian internment in 1942 and features Kogawa's childhood home. Over the years, Kogawa's childhood home has become a symbol of lost hope and happiness and a central image in her writings. Located at 1450 West 64th Avenue in the Marpole neighbourhood of Vancouver, the historic Joy Kogawa House is now threatened with demolition. The owner of the property has given TLC and the Save Kogawa House committee only until April 30 to fundraise the $700,000 needed to purchase the house. So far, more than $220,500 has been raised from 384 donors around the world.

This fundraising event will help TLC reach its fundraising goal and help to save the house as a cultural landmark for all Canadians. Once protected, the house will be a used as a writing retreat, enabling new writers to create works focusing on human rights issues. It will also be open for public and school tours to educate people about the Japanese Canadian experience during World War II.
