THE SAFE HARBOUR PROGRAM

Visionary - is part of a vision for a diverse and inclusive province that celebrates strong, healthy and harmonious communities. That vision starts at home - with local businesses and public organizations. Safe Harbour locations are places where differences are welcomed and valued. Safe Harbours are for people who find themselves in situations where they experience discrimination or harassment and briefly need a safe place to which they can turn. Each new Safe Harbour location is part of a growing network of forward-looking businesses and organizations that proudly embrace the richness and diversity of BC’s communities.

Proud Beginnings - The first Safe Harbour project began in Nanaimo in 2004. A wide range of businesses and public organizations signed on to become the first Safe Harbours in British Columbia. Now, dozens of locations proudly display the Safe Harbour window decal, and the Nanaimo Action for Diversity Team has received national recognition from the Canadian Race Relations Foundation for their innovation in developing Safe Harbour.

"The Safe Harbour training which our staff received only made even clearer how important it is to have Safe Harbours available to the community, especially in the downtown. This training also increased our staff's awareness and appreciation for diversity. This program not only allows us to give practical support to people who have experienced racism or hate, but also gives us the opportunity to say that we as a business in this community will not accept racism or hate activity in our community."

- Anne Kuzminski, Manager, Royal Bank (Nanaimo)

Safe Harbours Across BC - With support from the BC Anti-Racism and Multiculturalism Program and the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies of BC, The Richmond Multicultural Concerns Society is refining the Safe Harbour model and resources for use in the City of Richmond.

Safe Harbour Workshop in Richmond - The Safe Harbour Workshop will assist organizations and businesses to create Safe Harbours for the diverse communities and groups who use their services. Those who will attend a Safe Harbour workshop will work or volunteer in a public organization, a business, a place where people congregate, work, play, learn and meet. People participating in the Safe Harbour Workshop will learn that a Safe Harbour is a place that welcomes and values differences. It is a place where differences are embraced and accommodated. It is a place where anyone who is a target of discrimination, harassment or bullying will be assisted and made to feel safe.

The objectives of the workshop are framed around four key questions.

1. In what ways are we different and similar?
2. What does it mean to have an environment that welcomes and values differences?
3. How do we create a place that welcomes and values differences?
4. What is a “Safe Harbour” in our community?
The participants attending the Safe Harbour Workshop will also learn about the key steps in assisting someone who has been the target of discrimination, bullying or harassment. Those steps are:

  • Listen
  • Acknowledge
  • Support
  • Assistance/Intervention
  • Follow-up

  • Safe Harbour Workshop dates, times and location The Safe Harbour Workshops will be held at the Richmond Cultural Center, Minoru Park Plaza, 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond. The workshops will be held on the following date and times.
