HAS EVERYONE SEEN OUR NEW PARK SPACE??

It is located, at what once was, and may still be called, the Tin Shed Site (across from the Steveston Hotel) in front of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Nat'l Historic Site. We have the City of Richmond and Steveston Harbour Authority to thank for the new green space for!! Some of have been waiting almost, what seems to be decades for this to finalize. Congratulations!

STEVESTON MUSEUM AND POST OFFICE

The Steveston Museum Society would like to remind all businesses and residents about the services they offer. Don't forget when you are doing your any mailing that you buy your stamps and send your parcels through the Steveston Post Office. The Post Office is run by the Society and all proceeds are used to operate the Museum. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MUSEUM.

The Steveston Museum has completed a history exhibit called "STEVESTON RECOLLECTIONS: HISTORY OF A VILLAGE" which is now available online in the Community Memories program of the Virtual Museum of Canada website. It includes 197 pictures and text in a chronology of Steveston from its beginning to the Tall Ships Festival in 2002. It was done entirely by the local museum volunteers for the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), an agency of the federal Department of Canadian Heritage. April 3 - Season Opening


"Mayday: The Risky Business of Fishing"

The GOG's largest temporary exhibit to date will open on April 3 at 1:00 pm. The finishing touches are being applied to the interactive exhibits and to artist Jen Yu's bold illustrations that will demonstrate five search and rescue stories from the West Coast fishing industry. Try on an immersion suit, or test your knowledge of vessel stability on our stability model. We expect a large turnout fot his event, and that the hundreds of people who come to visit our sure to spend some time strolling the streets of Steveston.

The GOG Cannery Society had their annual AGM on March 6 and two new Board of Directors were elected. Joining the Society board are Ed Zyblut and former city councillor Lyn Greenhill. We welcome them, and thank all the returning board members who help run the Society. A special thanks to all the local businesses that donated prizes for the AGM, your support is always appreciated!

Heritage artist Jo Scott-B winning numerous awards and in 1989 awarded the Heritage Award from the City of Vancouver, has been busy painting Steveston's historic buildings for an outstanding 2005 Steveston Calendar. This Fund Raiser for the Gulf of Georgia Society will be launched and the original paintings will be exhibited at the Cannery, June 26th in celebration of our 10th Anniversary. Calendars will be available at the Cannery Gift Store. Don't be disappointed, quantities are limited.

The Cannery Gift Store carries great hostess gifts, exclusive items, local artist work, first nation's works of art including art cards and matted prints also lovely boxed smoke salmon, pates and cook books. THE CANNERY STORE IS OPEN 7 DAYS AND WEEK 10:00 - 5:00. The store's number is 604-664-9006. WE ARE STEVESTON'S BEST KEPT SECRET. The Gift Store is located just inside the Cannery doors and no admission required. Come on in, say hi and browse around.

"Dangerous Waters" Wrecks and Rescues off the BC Coast
A a book by Keith Keller will be available in the Cannery Store. There are still some autographed books available. One of his great stories will be featured in the exhibit. We have a beautiful selection of local artisans work; Denman Island Chocolate; smoked salmon; first nations merchandise; hand made aprons, potholders, etc.; great book selection including cook books; pottery; baby, kiddies, youth and adult clothing.

We will be open seven days a week April 3rd to October 31st including the Christmas 2004 season. The Store is located just inside the main doors of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, National Historic Site of Canada (no admission is required for browsing and shopping in the Cannery Store). Drop by and say hello and you will be sure to be greeted with a big smile. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society Membership entitles you to 20% off regular priced merchandise see above for details.

Jimmy Ng Memorial Hockey Tournament and Safety Awareness Day. Held at the Steveston Community Lacrosse Box (behind the Community Centre) This will be a two day event held on May 29th and 30th. Several teams composing of the RCMP, Coast Guard Aux., Firefighters, City of Richmond and local business will compete in a road hockey tournament. Proceeds from the event will go towards a Charity chosen by Jimmy Ng's parents. Last year, funds were given to create a legacy scholarship at a local High School. The RCMP, the Steveston Harbour Authority and Rotary Club of Steveston sponsor the event.

LONDON HERITAGE FARM

London Farm tearoom is now open from noon to 5 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. We are also having an Art Show on July 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is the first annual "Fraser River Art Festival at London Heritage Farm". There will also be an Artist's Tea on Saturday, July 10 from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 11 from noon to 7 p.m. The art show will be co-hosted by the Richmond Artist Guild. We will have artists painting, art work for sale, live music, children's hands-on activities, and a piper for the opening ceremonies.

THE SOGETSU IKEBANA BRANCH

Is going to have a Master teacher visit Steveston on June 27. He will be conducting workshops at the Steveston Buddhist Temple. He will be doing a demonstration in Vancouver on the
26th at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. I am attaching a publicity letter (Clarion Call) that explains his visit.

We were wondering if it would be possible to put this in the Villager Community Calendar. We will also be having a 'Flowork' in Steveston to coordinate with this celebration of the Master's visit. This is a series of flower works in various establishments around Steveston, i.e. Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

THE RICHMOND HOSPITAL AUXILIARY THRIFT SHOP

Located at 3920 Moncton Street, has been in Steveston for 27 years and has raised over $2.3 million for the Richmond Hospital. This money is spent on new equipment for the hospital and to pay for the continuing support of the recreational needs of the residents of the Minoru Residence and Lions Manor. Our total commitment for 2004 is $336,600. The Thrift Shop is run ENTIRELY by volunteers.

Volunteers are urgently needed for our Monday, Tuesday and Saturday shifts. If you have a few hours to spare once a week please call Jan Halliday, Manager, Volunteer Resources, at 604-244-5176.
