    SAVE STEVESTON’S “LITTLE” PARK!

Update: On October 07, 2004 The Richmond Review printed a passionate letter to the editor entitled “Save Austin Harris Park”. As a result the paper sent a reporter to investigate.
    www.yourlibrary.ca/community/RichmondReview/ Archive/RR20041007/yourview.html - 16k - 20 Oct 2004

On October 16, 2004 the Review carried the story “Neighbours rally to save 'park'”. By Matthew Hoekstra, Staff Reporter. www.richmondreview.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper =45 - 37k - 20 Oct 2004

On Monday October 18th council met to discuss the Community Plan Amendment Bylaw concerning the Trites Rd development. As Austin Harris Park is across the street from the development the loss of the park came up as a hot topic. Many thought that appropriate green space was not available for the neighborhood and it prompted a good discussion. Bill McNulty mentioned to council that the neighborhood parks are what we need and that he had directed parks staff to try to figure out how to get Austin Harris for a permanent park. Harold Steves also supported trying to keep Austin Harris Park and Linda Barnes was also very positive.

At the end of the discussion (We were there until 11pm!) council voted to send the OCP plan back for tweaking and they generated a list of things they wanted staff to look at. At one point they almost put Austin Harris specifically into the amendment but later revised it to have staff look at the park/green space issue as a whole. www.city.richmond.bc.ca/council/hearings/2004/ph2004_list.htm
