The Steveston Museum has completed a history exhibit called "STEVESTON RECOLLECTIONS: HISTORY OF A VILLAGE" which is now available online in the Community Memories program of the Virtual Museum of Canada website. It includes 197 pictures and text in a chronology of Steveston from its beginning to the Tall Ships Festival in 2002. It was done entirely by the local museum volunteers for the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), an agency of the federal Department of Canadian Heritage. HELP SAVE STEVESTON’S “LITTLE” PARK!

Our city council is now considering a proposal to develop Austin Harris Park into a large subsidized assisted living complex. The park is located off the north side of Moncton across from Trites Rd. has been a part of our community and zoned for school and public use for decades. Not only has this park been a place for our children to play and friends to meet, but like other neighborhood parks it also gives the community it’s character.

Taking away another park and replacing it with high-density subsidized housing not only affects the neighbors in this community, it is also part of a bigger issue. The transformation of our beautiful green neighborhoods from gentle refuge to high-density city has been happening through out Richmond. We understand that cities must grow and we also support subsidized housing but not by taking our parks away to do it. Our city council has now come to a cross roads in the development of Richmond. By writing, phoning or simple signing a petition you can help influence them to build the type of Richmond you want to live in. Help save this little part of Steveston and guide our city council into the next phase of municipal planning. CHILDREN`S VILLAGE

Takes part in Closing Ceremony at the Olympic Games - 29/08/2004 – On Sunday 29 August, millions of people around the world watched the XXVIII Olympiad draw to a close in spectacular fashion. Among the participants at the ceremony, held in the Olympic Stadium in Athens, was ten year old Fotini, one of the children from nearby SOS Children’s Village Vari.
The Olympic Committee and the Artistic Director of the opening and closing ceremony, Mr. Dimitris Papaioannou, decided to mark the closing ceremony with the presence of a child from SOS Children’s Villages Greece. Young Fotini, who lives with her five brothers and sisters in the SOS Children’s Village, was chosen to undertake the important task of extinguishing the Olympic flame.

Wearing a flowing white dress, she was accompanied up to the Olympic torch by two Greek athletes, where she lit a small torch and then “blew out” the flame marking the end of the games in Athens. She then passed on the flame to a young Chinese girl, representing the Olympics’ next journey to Beijing, host of the 2008 summer Olympic games.

Prior to the start of the games, four other children from SOS Children’s Village Greece took part in the torch relay, carrying the flame on its journey to Athens. SOS Children’s Villages Greece further benefited from the Games thanks to its national basketball team and silver medal-winning women’s water polo teams, which both donated money to the organization for every goal they scored.

It was a great honour for SOS Children’s Villages to have been invited to take part in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, and no doubt an experience that Fotini will never forget.
