JOIN US NOW!
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is a SOCIETY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY. We have been delivering Visitor Services since April 1996. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is owned by Parks Canada and in April 2000, the Society assumed the responsibilities of all site operations. That means our Members' ideas, our Members' programs, and our Members' involvement will ensure that the West Coast Fishing Industry's story will continue to be told in an exciting and stimulating way. Our Administration office is open and staffed 12 months a year.

For those of you who may not be aware, the day-to-day operations are under contract with Parks Canada Agency. We do this through a 16 member Board of Directors, with its roots firmly entrenched in the Fishing industry and Steveston Community. To help us with the day to day-running operations, the Society Board has hired a full complement of Staff, with Mark Sakai, our Manager and his 7 full time staff. Their responsibility is to develop Public Programs, take care of our joint Archival Collection with Parks Canada, operate our Gift Shop, Market and promote our site, train Volunteers and Interpreters, and maintain the upkeep of this building. During the summer, our staff increases to nearly 20 with our site interpreters and gift shop.

We are very proud of what we have accomplished as a Society since we started this journey in 1986. We are also proud to celebrate with our staff and Parks Canada, 10 years of excellence in public exhibits.

February 19th 2004 - Phil O'Flaherty
We welcome Phil O'Flaherty to SFG. Phil's experience listening to great Irish Bands such as Planxty and the Bothy Band, with their fantastic arrangements of traditional songs, reels, and jigs, convinced him that this was something he had to do himself. "Scatter the Mud" formed in 1990, was one of Canada's most traditional, yet innovative Celtic bands. They recorded two cd's and toured Canada coast to coast. These days Phil is concentrating on song writing and a solo career. Phil's first solo CD, "Too Fond of Walking", was released in June 2003. The album is a mix of traditional and original songs.

March 18th 2004 - Steve Palmer at SFG
A man who has done his time in the "trenches", Steve has been playing guitar for 35 years. From the "Waifers" and "Warp Factor" in the early days in Alberta, to life on the road across Canada and the USA. From "dives" to "luxury resorts, to pubs and hotels" this man has done it all. Come hear a guitar player who can switch between flat picking and Travis style finger picking with ease. His first cd "From Here To Nashville" is superb

Did you know that with the power of the community, SOS Children's Village gives foster children a "house" they can call home? Throughout the province many children are left without families. Or their parents are unable to suitably care for them because of extreme poverty, mental disorders or alcohol or drug abuse. SOS Children's Village provides foster children with life skills and family homes for a lifetime.

Come to SOS Children's Village BC's OPEN HOUSE and find out how you can give foster children the chance to be kids again." By invitation only... an exclusive opportunity to see inside an SOS Village and how our community helps foster families... mark your calendars for March 11 - SOS' Open House presented by VanCity. www.sos-bc.org
