Community Events September 2003:

THE ROTARY CLUB OF STEVESTON

Will be putting on the Fish Boat Festival on September 26 and 27. The event will run during the day and will be located beside the fish sales float (where Vancouver Whale Watch usually keeps their boats). The public will be able to get a first hand look at many of the working boats that operate out of Steveston Harbour as well as hear from the crew. Some boats will allow the public to get on board and up close and personal. The day is meant to be a fun and educational day for the whole family.

8TH ANNUAL CANCER SURVIVORS WALK

I am a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer society's Richmond Unit and every year, for the past 8 now, I have been on an organizing committee that coordinates a local Richmond walk for cancer survivors. The Richmond Unit is proud to announce our 8th Annual Cancer Survivors Walk this year. The "Walk for a Friend" will be held at Minoru Plaza on Sunday, September 28th, 2003. Approximately, two hundred people attend each year. Start time of the walk...9:30am. I was just looking at your Steveston Community Website and thought it might be a good idea, if possible, to add us to your Steveston Community E-Newsletter.

RICHMOND TALL SHIPS® SET TO CAST OFF

Jamie Pitblado of the Pacific Newspaper Groups' Vancouver Sun and Province papers and Janice Podmore, Chair of the Richmond Tall Ships Steering Committee (RTS) are pleased to announce the launch of the Richmond Tall Ships® 2005 Charter Sponsorship program.

Planning is now underway for the still-to-be-confirmed 2005 Richmond Tall Ships® Challenge event, which is expected to attract up to 400,000 attendees over five days of ship port visits July 14th - 18th, 2005. Podmore expressed gratitude to those who are providing the seed funding for the initial planning of the 2005 Tall Ships® Challenge. She went on to explain that the event won't be announced until after organizers have reviewed the Business Plan expected to be complete in the early fall, secure the rights to the event from the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) and confirm commitments from the City of Richmond.

"It reminds me of Vancouver's Olympic Bid in the early days," commented Podmore. "We have strong backers from our community who want to see us secure the event for Richmond. They understand the risk that being in a 'bid' situation creates, and are putting their support behind our team. We are honoured they have such confidence in our abilities and will do everything we can to secure the privilege of hosting the Challenge® in Richmond in 2005."

When asked why the papers have signed on as Charter Sponsors so early in the game, Pitblado commented, "We thought last summer's event was fantastic. We were heavily involved as sponsors in 2002 and we want to do what ever we can to help bring the ships back to Steveston in 2005."

Charter Sponsors are defined as event sponsors who sign up for the Tall Ships 2005 prior to the October 1, 2003 deadline. Sponsor categories range from $25 for individual donors to $50,000 major corporate sponsorships. As part of the Charter Sponsor's recognition program, the Vancouver Sun and Province newspapers will feature all Tall Ship donors in promotional ads this fall.

The Steering Committee has taken over the responsibility for hosting the ships from the City of Richmond and is in the process of forming a non-profit society to operate the event. The committee has already raised $40,000, bringing them half way to achieving their $80,000 target by October 1st.

Sponsors to date include: The City of Richmond, Fraser River Port Authority, Tourism Richmond, Brain Communications, the Vancouver Sun and the Province newspapers as well as others.

The 2005 Tall Ships Challenge® series is part of an annual series of tall ship events organized by ASTA. The first pacific coast Challenge series took place in the summer of 2002 in the ports of Richmond BC, Seattle WA, San Francisco CA, Los Angeles CA and San Diego CA. Richmond's event attracted 400,000 visitors and the City was voted Port of the Year by ASTA in November 2002.

The Tall Ships ChallengeR 2005 proposed schedule of ports include Victoria BC, Tacoma WA, Richmond BC, July 14th to 18th, Anacortes WA, Port Alberni BC, along with ports in Oregon and California.

The Richmond Tall Ships Steering Committee is a volunteer-run committee that is in the process of becoming the Richmond Tall Ships Festival Society, a registered non-profit. The society will act as host for Richmond's 2005 event.
