GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

CANNERY NIGHT - Come and bring the whole family - tap your toes; dance your
jig on Aug. 3, 2003 at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society will host TILLERS FOLLY, for an evening
of Dancing and Dining, BBQ salmon dinner community made deserts. Licensed.
Call 604-664-9134 for tickets. Reserve your table now.

TILLERS FOLLY - "The East Coast of Canada has had a number of bands that have celebrated that area's history and musical links to it's Scottish/Irish/English roots, but the West Coast never really has had anything similar until now. The British Columbia band The Tiller's Folly is stepping in to fill that void with a historically based collection of songs that are played with a strong Celtic flavour. Led by vocalist/guitarist Bruce Coughlan, the band plays an original style of melodic Folk/Rock with twin fiddles, whistles, and mandolin, backing vocals and a guest drummer on most tracks. Coughlan draws upon the rich heritage of the Canadian west for most of his subject material, interspersed with original instrumental pieces that draw upon the Canadian Celtic tradition as well. It's music that works on two levels: as a history lesson and as good music in it's own right."

Art Show Opening - Posts and Beams and Canning Machines

June 19 - Aug. 22/03

Posts and Beams and Canning Machines gathers a body of works inspired by the
physical structures of salmon canneries of the West Coast. In the fall of
2002, a call for entries was sent to the visual arts communities of British
Columbia. The invitation encouraged artists to submit proposals using the
"cannery architecture" as central reference to their work. Fourteen projects
involving sixteen artists, from various locations of Coastal BC, were
jury-selected. The artists were given only 13 weeks to produce create their
artwork.

Displayed together, the artworks offer a virtual guided tour of the cannery
buildings- emphasizing their architectural details, describing their
physical surroundings, and making reference to the experience of cannery
workers. Although the artists' responses range in scale, media and focus,
all are motivated by a personal connection with the buildings and the
history they depict.
