STEVESTON A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE

Richmond News excerpt - By Kelly Horner (view article)

Maybe it's the proximity of the water, the many walking paths or abundance of blossoming gardens. Maybe it's the people - the relaxed atmosphere among individuals, families and children. Whatever the reason, Steveston Village is becoming a part of a trend in alternative health that has the community now offering up several options.
According to Marcia Freeman, Richmond's economic development officer, the alternative healthcare growth in the Steveston is not by design. And she finds it curious that so many holistic and wellness can be found in one area.

But it's no mystery to classical homeopath Catherine Riceman. "I'm from the Sunshine Coast. I came out to Steveston one day and it felt like home. It is very intimate out here," she said. Riceman began working in Steveston with the Satori Integrative Health Centre in February. She is one of the few homeopaths in the area and has been quickly building a client base by getting out and introducing herself to the community.

She said she sought out Steveston, tucked away from the urban sprawl of the Lower Mainland, because of its classic small-town feel. She also said there is a broadening understanding there of alternative healthcare. "I think it's more that people are wanting better and more personal care and they are realizing they want to achieve long-term health, not just physically, but emotionally," she said.

Steveston also has a variety of other alternative and holistic wellness options. There are several businesses in the area offering everything from meditation classes to massage therapy. According to a local business directory, there are more than eight holistic and wellness operations.

For alternative healthcare practitioners, the location is obvious. "Steveston is such a wonderful place and an added bonus is that people here are more health conscious," said Eric Chin, a naturopath. Naturopaths focus on how the body naturally operates to address health concerns. Chin recently opened the Pangea Clinic for Naturopathic Medicine. He says about 40 per cent of his clientele reside in the old fishing village.

Staff at Satori say, too, that almost all their clientele are from the Steveston area. Serendipity's Backyard, a spiritual book and gift shop, was one of the first to set up in the village 17 years ago.
Today, along with its many alternative books, cards and crystals, the store offers courses in yoga, a popular form of exercise which focuses not only the asana, or posture, but how the body balances and breathes. Yoga is said to increase blood flow regulate the hormonal glands and increase flexibility.

Penny Allport, owner of Serendipity's Backyard and yoga instructor, tapped in early to what she saw as a "huge movement to take care of our health and wellness." "This could become a bedroom community, where people sleep and go to work, but really the draw to living in Steveston is nature," she said. "There will be people drawn to my way of teaching and there will people drawn to others way of teaching."

PRIVATE SESSIONS - Penny is available for private sessions in yoga, breath and meditation.
