Steveston Farmers and Artisan Market

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 23, 2009 Second Annual WILD BC SEAFOOD FEST ... wild BC salmon, sablefish and sardines Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Vancouver, BC: Back by popular demand, the second annual Wild BC Seafood Fest will take place on Saturday, August 29th between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm at the Steveston Harbour Authority Fisherman’s Park (in front of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site • 12138 Fourth Avenue) in the fishing community of Steveston, Richmond, BC. This is a free outdoor public event to celebrate and enjoy wild BC salmon, sablefish and sardines!

Join members of BC’s commercial fishing industry and some of BC’s most acclaimed chefs and seafood experts as they demonstrate a variety of amazing wild BC seafood recipes and provide tips on buying, storing, preparing and even eating some of our favourite wild BC seafood. Plus sample their amazing creations and receive copies of the featured recipes to savour them at home!

This year’s special guest chefs include: Quang Dang (Chef De Cuisine of C Restaurant, Vancouver, BC) who will feature contemporary west coast creations; Jean Francis Quaglia and Alessandra Quaglia (Chefs and Proprietors of the Provence Marinaside and Provence Mediterranean Grill Restaurants, Vancouver, BC) who will present Mediterranean inspired creations; and, Stephen Wong (Vancouver journalist, food and beverage consultant and cookbook author) who will present Asian inspired recipes. Award-winning fishmonger from The Salmon Shop and Screaming Mimi’s in North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Quay Market, Kosta Zogaris will also add incredible information and enthusiasm as the cooking stage MC.

Other event activities will guarantee fabulous fun and feasting for all: sample smoked salmon, sablefish and sardine creations prepared especially for the event by award winning Classic Smokehouse (2003) Inc. of Vancouver, BC; learn all about wild BC salmon, sablefish and sardines direct from fishermen and other members of the industry; buy wild BC salmon, sablefish and sardines straight from the fishermen at the Steveston dock; buy value-added wild BC salmon, sablefish and sardine products from specialty vendors in the Market Area; partake in the kids’ activities; and, listen to the live entertainment provided by Richmond’s popular Darren Specht and the Blues-Hawks. And new this year, get ready to visit the expanded Market Area to purchase delicious wild BC seafood creations from popular local restaurants including C Restaurant and the Provence Restaurants, and the best specialty food products that BC has to offer to prepare delectable meals at home showcasing wild BC salmon, sablefish and sardines.

Wild BC Seafood Fest is presented by the Canadian Pacific Sardine Association, Canadian Sablefish Association and BC Salmon Marketing Council. The Canadian Pacific Sardine Association, Canadian Sablefish Association and BC Salmon Marketing Council are non-profit, legally constituted organizations representing permit holders in the management and marketing of their respective wild BC seafood fisheries.

PARKING IN STEVESTON - For those of you who may have missed the "Open House" at the community centre today, it was formulated to discuss proposed changes to the Parking situation in Steveston.

In 2006, a poll was taken in Steveston to see what people thought of proposed changes to parking. Nothing was done at that time, but the City of Richmond is once again putting forth ideas for proposed changes.

Your input / ideas are encouraged !!! Because many folks couldn't attend today, they have put the Questionnaire on-line. Easy Peasy.

The website below outlines what those changes might entail, and there is a quick and easy form to fill and send in, which will give you a chance to "voice" your ideas/thoughts.

1. One main change is to consider a stop light at the corner of 1 Road and Moncton (to replace the 4 way stop). With so many children in and around that corner (coming from the Centre, Park etc) a stop light isn't a bad idea. Many people just don't know how to manoeuvre thru a 4 way stop correctly.

2. Another proposed change is to introduce 35 angled parking spots on Bayview on the north side, between 1 Road and 3rd Avenue. These would replace existing parallel spots, but City would like to make these 35 spots metered, to help pay for the physical changes to curbing etc.

3. Another proposed change is to designate a special place where tour busses could park when bringing people into the village. Now they park on almost any street, taking up valuable parking spots.

Important Note: The general consensus seems to be (in 2006 and now) to leave the current 2 hour parking limits in place, and NOT introduce metered parking to existing spots. WHEW - I'm all for that!

I encourage you all to look at the website and submit your form. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and hopefully the parking situation won't change much - we
don't want to see metered parking in our Village ! That would be disastrous for merchants.

GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY SOCIETY

OPEN FOR THE SEASON – What’s A Float Exhibition - What's Afloat: Boats on the Fraser River a fascinating new exhibit opening at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on May 2. If you've ever wondered about the myriad of different boats on the river, and what they all do, this exhibit will answer your questions! Visitors will also have a chance to buy the boat spotter's guide that goes along with the Exhibit. In addition the Cannery will be alive this summer as Joe Kovacs, along with interpreters and volunteers, builds an all-wood lapstrake skiff.

This is a summer long, major project that will introduce our visitors to traditional techniques that were used in Steveston’s wooden fish boat building industry. This is a great project to volunteer on and learn/demonstrate your wood working skills.

Salmon Return May 2 to 31. Inspired by the life cycle of the salmon and the massive structure of the Gulf of Georgia, "Salmon Return" finds new niches for art throughout the Cannery. EarthArts is a collective collaborative of local professional artists dedicated to developing artwork that speaks to the human/nature relationship. Each EarthArts member has a significant background as a professional artist creating innovative work.

Richmond's traditional connections with the sea will be celebrated with a classic wooden boat show, sea shanties and much more at the 6th Annual Richmond Maritime Festival from Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site.

The whole family can enjoy the live performances of sea songs and shanties, participate in hands-on demonstrations and row the "Juanita" which is a replica of an 18 century of a Spanish long boat.. There will be a variety of maritime exhibits and demonstrations, such as knot tying, rope making, and caulking board activity. Children can enjoy fish printing, model boat building, face painting and the Port Metro Vancouver's Captain's Challenge Scavenger Hunt. Many boats will be at the docks of the shipyard, including historic fishing boats and classic power and sail boats.

The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 21; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard, located in Steveston at 5180 Westwater Drive. The festival is sponsored by the Port Metro Vancouver, Britannia Shipyard, and M & M Meats.

Our shop is run entirely by volunteers. Thanks to our customers and generous donations we once again are able to purchase much needed equipment for the Richmond Hospital and provide support to Minoru Residence and Lions Manor.

IN MEMORY
On June 21, 2009, Steveston lost another business owner Shirley Dunn, and we lost a friend. Shirley and her late husband John founded a shop on Steveston Landing called Lulu Island Designs. The two of them made a great pair. John was a gifted artist and Shirley a gifted marketer. Shirley was fun loving and John had a gift of humour. It reflected in his T-Shirt designs that they sold in their shop. Shirley and John were very active with the Steveston Business Association (SBA). They along with my husband Norris and I, worked together 23 years ago to develop the foundation for what is known today as the Steveston Villager Business Directory. Some of John’s art work graces some of the first issues. I will miss Shirley, as I have missed John, for so long now. I know she and John are together marketing and shopping somewhere, probably in a place not unlike Steveston Village, a place they loved so much!
