GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY SOCIETY

OPEN FOR THE SEASON – What’s A Float Exhibition - What's Afloat: Boats on the Fraser River a fascinating new exhibit opening at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on May 2. If you've ever wondered about the myriad of different boats on the river, and what they all do, this exhibit will answer your questions! Visitors will also have a chance to buy the boat spotter's guide that goes along with the Exhibit. In addition the Cannery will be alive this summer as Joe Kovacs, along with interpreters and volunteers, builds an all-wood lapstrake skiff.

This is a summer long, major project that will introduce our visitors to traditional techniques that were used in Steveston’s wooden fish boat building industry. This is a great project to volunteer on and learn/demonstrate your wood working skills.

Salmon Return May 2 to 31. Inspired by the life cycle of the salmon and the massive structure of the Gulf of Georgia, "Salmon Return" finds new niches for art throughout the Cannery. EarthArts is a collective collaborative of local professional artists dedicated to developing artwork that speaks to the human/nature relationship. Each EarthArts member has a significant background as a professional artist creating innovative work.

IRWIN BARKER & FRIENDS:

FIGHTING CANCER WITH COMEDY

SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2009

For the second year, River Rock Casino Resort will be presenting “Irwin Barker & Friends: Fighting Cancer With Comedy” … a hilarious evening of stand-up with all proceeds going to the Richmond Hospital Foundation. Irwin Barker is a Gemini nominated comedy writer and performer who is well known in the Vancouver comedy scene. He is currently a staff writer on CBC’s award-winning Rick Mercer Report. Prior to that, he spent several years as a writer for CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

In June 2007, Irwin was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a rare type of terminal cancer. Since then, he has been actively involved as an inspirational speaker on how he has used humour as a vital coping mechanism in his personal fight against cancer. In Irwin’s own words, “Cancer has my body but not my spirit and I’ll continue to make jokes … not so much about cancer but in spite of it.”

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Richmond Hospital Foundation’s $4 million MRI Campaign. “Our new MRI will start seeing patients this fall. This unique “open” machine is the only public one of its kind in BC”. says Lisa Westermark, Executive Director of the Richmond Hospital Foundation. Together we are reducing wait times, improving access and allowing for consultation between radiologists and specialists. The show will also feature comedians from across Canada including local comic Graham Clark who can currently be seen on Citytv’s The CityNews List, triple Gemini winner Tim Steeves and Toronto’s own Tim Rykert who recently toured throughout North America as the opening act for Michael Bublé along with a few surprise guests.

STEVESTON FOLK GUILD

Tom Rawson June 18th
The Guild welcomes Seattle based folksinger and storyteller Tom Rawson.
Tom is a veteran of the folk festival circuit, and travels all over the Northwest with his humorous stories, user friendly songs,. His acoustic folk philosophy is guaranteed to leave you smiling. Armed with long-necked banjo and other weapons of mass delight, Tom will have you singing along in no time. Tune up your vocal chords; you'll need 'em, and you won’t be disappointed
Redboot Quartet July 16th.
You may have already heard their sweet sounds. Four skilled musicians fuse their eclectic backgrounds to produce a fiery blend of smoky Gypsy cabaret. Fierce original compositions test their capabilities. This four-piece boldly scorches its own sultry signature on classics like "Blue Drag". The result is a sensuous blend of dramatic gypsy and swinging jazz laced with a unique Balkan influence. They are as riveting to watch as they are to listen to. Each of the four players is a dedicated, accomplished musician with a quick ear, a passionate heart and a fire in the belly. Each brings a unique perspective to this union. But there is also a feisty side here, perhaps a tribute to the music they play...
