Calling all foodies! The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market is excited to introduce Chef in the Market, a weekly event which will take place each Sunday at noon beginning May 11th. Each week a professional chef will present a half hour cooking demonstration in the Market’s outdoor kitchen. Market goers will have a unique opportunity to watch chefs work with seasonal foods available from vendors at the market.

Chef Ian Lai, an instructor at the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver and the founding director for the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society, a non-profit organization that engages elementary school children with the earth and agriculture at large, will be the first Chef in the Market on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 11th. Chef Lai will be the Market’s resident chef and will be cooking approximately twice a month from May through September.

Upcoming chefs this market season include Diane and Doug Clement (authors of the just released Start Fresh!), Nathan Hyam (author of New Thai Cuisine), Executive Chef Ken Iaci (Papi’s Ristorante) and Tahera Rawji (author of Simply Indian and soon to be released Simply More Indian), with many more chefs soon to be announced!

6th Annual Jimmy Ng Memorial Street Hockey Tournament

May 24-25, 2008, 8am to 6pm, Steveston Community Centre (lacrosse box)

For additional information, call Jim Toogood at 604-271-9490 or e-mail JimToogood@shaw.ca.

About the tournament

Groups from all forms of emergency, community service, and business are invited to enter teams in this friendly non-competitive tournament. The Rotary Club of Steveston wishes all participants good luck.

Attendance at this annual tournament is by donation, with proceeds from attendance, player registration, food sales, and prize draws going towards support of local emergency services, and related prevention, and education.

The tournament is held in memory of Constable Jimmy Ng, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on September 15, 2002 while responding to a call when his marked police cruiser was hit by youths who were street racing.

Constable Ng grew up in Richmond, graduated from Matthew McNair High School, and joined the RCMP in 1996. He served his first 5 years in Duncan BC before transferring to Richmond to serve in the community in which he grew up.

Constable Ng was a member of the RCMP Richmond Detachment, C Watch, and an active local volunteer. He was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit No. 7, based in Steveston. As a volunteer member of this team he had taken part in many search and rescue missions.

With affectionate memory of Constable Jimmy Ng we express gratitude, admiration and respect to all of our Police Officers, Firefighters, Coast Guard Personnel, Ambulance Service, and all other emergency personnel who risk their lives on a daily basis for the betterment and safety of all.

Step Onboard the Niña

Relive Christopher Columbus' Bold Adventure !
The Niña, a replica 15th century caravel redonda, is considered the most authentic replica ship sailing today... http://www.thenina.com/

This elegant ship will make her voyage to Britannia Shipyard, National Historic Site where she will be available for school tours from June 9 - 13, 2008. Your students will tour the Niña and relive Columbus' exciting journey of exploration to the New World!

About the Niña

The Niña was Christopher Columbus favourite ship, the one he very nearly died on in 1493, upon which he ultimately logged more than 40,000 km (25,000 miles).

Built in Brazil by the Columbus Foundation, ship-makers built this tribute to Columbus using the same kind of tools and techniques the original ship's builders would have used. In December 1991, the Niña left Brazil and sailed to Costa Rica on a 6,400 km (4,000 mile) unescorted maiden voyage to take part in the filming of the movie 1492, starring Gerard Dépardieu as Columbus. Since then, the ship has visited over 300 ports sailing out of her home port of Grand Caymen.

The Community Arts Council of Richmond is please to announce that their ARTISANS' GALLERIA is now open!

At a pre-opening ceremony in late March, the ribbon was cut by City of Richmond Councilor Sue Halsey-Brandt , who declared a bright new future for The Community Arts Council of Richmond and by extension, its members, artists and the public who will benefit from a Galleria of this caliber

This wonderful, new, bright space is located on Moncton Street, in the heart of Steveston. It is nestled between the Cannery Café and La Tandoor restaurants, on the north side of the street.

Double the size of their old location, it is filled with works of art, including pottery from 10 different potters, paintings, prints and photographs from over 20 artists, fabric, metal, glass, wood, jewellery, decorative painting, cards and more, from over 25 various artist members.

All work is juried and almost all are one of kind, so the stock is always changing. When a piece is sold, it will be replaced with something that may be similar or completely different. So if you see something you love, don't hesitate, as it could be gone the next time you stop in.

This Galleria is part of the mandate of the Community Arts Council of Richmond , a not for profit charity, which has been supporting local artists for over 25 years. The larger space allows for an increase in the number of artists that are able to have a place to sell their creative endeavors and yet the prices are very reasonable for this quality of work.

As a non-profit charity, they cannot survive without the support of the community and their patrons. So the next time you need a gift for a special occasion, or even yourself, take a visit to the Artisan's Galleria and be amazed at the talented artists in our own area and also the rest of BC.

The Artisans' Galleria is open daily from 10 –5 at 3651 Moncton Street, Steveston BC V7E 3A5, 604-241-2790. For more information visit their website which is www.richmondartscouncil.com
