VOLUNTEER RICHMOND - Grab your mittens and lend a pair of hands as a volunteer for the 2008 Richmond Winter Festival!

“Winter Fest” is an outdoor street fair featuring live entertainment, ice skating, kid’s activities, community displays and a spectacular fireworks show. The event will take place Friday, February 8 from 5-10pm and Saturday, February 9 from 2-10pm between Richmond City Hall and Brighouse Park.

This event is the kick-off to Richmond’s Spirit of BC week (Feb 8 –16) festivities, which marks the two-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Games and celebrates Richmond’s role as a venue city.

Hundreds of volunteer event ambassadors are needed to assist in various capacities both prior to and during the event. Volunteers can apply online at www.VolunteerRichmond.ca.

Volunteering at Winter Fest is a great way to add events experience to your volunteer resume for the Olympic Games and to show your 2010 spirit and support. Group and family volunteer opportunities are available. Please contact Lindsay Baker, Coordinator of Volunteers, at 604-279-7031 or lbaker@volunteerrichmond.ca for more information.

About the tournament

Groups from all forms of emergency, community service, and business are invited to enter teams in this friendly non-competitive tournament. The Rotary Club of Steveston wishes all participants good luck.

Attendance at this annual tournament is by donation, with proceeds from attendance, player registration, food sales, and prize draws going towards support of local emergency services, and related prevention, and education.

The tournament is held in memory of Constable Jimmy Ng, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on September 15, 2002 while responding to a call when his marked police cruiser was hit by youths who were street racing.

Constable Ng grew up in Richmond, graduated from Matthew McNair High School, and joined the RCMP in 1996. He served his first 5 years in Duncan BC before transferring to Richmond to serve in the community in which he grew up.

Constable Ng was a member of the RCMP Richmond Detachment, C Watch, and an active local volunteer. He was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit No. 7, based in Steveston. As a volunteer member of this team he had taken part in many search and rescue missions.

With affectionate memory of Constable Jimmy Ng we express gratitude, admiration and respect to all of our Police Officers, Firefighters, Coast Guard Personnel, Ambulance Service, and all other emergency personnel who risk their lives on a daily basis for the betterment and safety of all.

THE COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF RICHMOND

Exciting News

The Community Arts Council of Richmond and their Courtyard Galleria will be moving this spring!

They have secured a retail space, which will be large enough to house both the Council and the Galleria!!

It is a block east from their present location and on the North Side and will allow everything to be housed at one location. It may even have enough space to again be able to offer art classes etc.

They are very excited about this new space as it will allow them to introduce more work by local artists and artisan’s, thereby offering more selection of quality juried work in one location.

As there will no longer be a courtyard, the name of the Galleria is being changed and will be announced as soon as it is registered. The move will take place during February or March and they hope to be open and operating by mid March or early April, so watch for further announcements.

In the meantime it is business as usual at the Courtyard Galleria and there is a selection of items at sale prices. This sale will last only as long as the unique items and cards last, so don’t delay, make a point to stop in and pick up some bargains and support your local artists.

During February, you may want to phone 604-241-2790 to make sure that they are open before stopping in, just in case they are at the new location-painting etc. As a non-profit organization they rely on volunteers to assist in the Galleria as well as doing the improvements in the new space. This can sometimes result in a closure of the shop for a short period of time, so better to be safe than sorry by phoning.

Your patronage and support is necessary to keep this Galleria operating so please think of them the next time you need to buy a gift for a friend or even yourself.
