Community Events November 2007:

HOW TO REMEMBER
By Julie Chandler

On Remembrance Day, we as Canadians pay our respect to fallen sailors, soldiers, airmen and others who have died for our freedom. I encourage you to play an active role in remembering these men and women. Here are ten practical suggestions in how you can remember:

1. Observe two minutes of silence at 11 am on November 11.
2. Wear a poppy, the flower of remembrance.
3. Give to the Royal Canadian Legion’s National Poppy and Remembrance Campaign. Contributions made will be used to assist needy veterans, ex-service members and their families.
4. Watch the national memorial service on TV which takes place at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
5. Get your kids involved by making a wreath with them or reading them an age appropriate book on war.
6. Go to websites like the Canadian Virtual War Memorial (www.virtualmemorial.gc.ca) which gives information on more than 116,000 Canadians who have died in war.
7. Go to a war memorial or a cemetery.
8. Attend a Remembrance Day Service.
9. Plan a visit to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
10. Learn something new. Here are three things you might not have previously known: The original name of Remembrance Day is Armistice Day.
There are more than 250,000 veterans in Canada alive today.

There are more than 2,800 Canadian soldiers, sailors and Air Force personnel currently deployed overseas on various operational missions. You can let them know you appreciate their service by sending them a message. Go to the website: www.forces.gc.ca/site/Community/Messageboard/index_e.asp

However you choose to remember these brave men and women, I’m certain it will be from a thankful heart. We have much in this land because of their service.
