GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY SOCIETY

OPEN FOR THE SEASON – What’s A Float Exhibition - What's Afloat: Boats on the Fraser River a fascinating new exhibit opening at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on May 2. If you've ever wondered about the myriad of different boats on the river, and what they all do, this exhibit will answer your questions! Visitors will also have a chance to buy the boat spotter's guide that goes along with the Exhibit. In addition the Cannery will be alive this summer as Joe Kovacs, along with interpreters and volunteers, builds an all-wood lapstrake skiff.

This is a summer long, major project that will introduce our visitors to traditional techniques that were used in Steveston’s wooden fish boat building industry. This is a great project to volunteer on and learn/demonstrate your wood working skills.

Salmon Return May 2 to 31. Inspired by the life cycle of the salmon and the massive structure of the Gulf of Georgia, "Salmon Return" finds new niches for art throughout the Cannery. EarthArts is a collective collaborative of local professional artists dedicated to developing artwork that speaks to the human/nature relationship. Each EarthArts member has a significant background as a professional artist creating innovative work.

STEVESTON FOLK GUILD

Mike Silver May 21st.
We have the pleasure of welcoming Mike Silver from the UK as our feature performer this evening. This is Mike’s first trip to Canada, and SFG is fortunate to be able to showcase Mike’s music. Mike has been a session musician for big names such as Chris de Burgh and Ralph McTell among others. He lives in Cornwall and has been successfully writing and playing music for more than 30 years. He particularly likes songs of longing, love and loss with haunting melodies and heart stopping lyrics, although in his music he also addresses every day issues. His warm and inviting voice is the perfect counterpoint to his remarkable guitar playing. Mike has 15 albums to his credit, and his latest “Heaven in Mind” is fantastic. Songs like “Midnight Train” and the poignant “Wrong Side of Midnight” will thrill you. All in all, Mike is a musician’s musician and you are in for a rare treat, so please welcome …. Mike Silver.
Tom Rawson June 18th
The Guild welcomes Seattle based folksinger and storyteller Tom Rawson.
Tom is a veteran of the folk festival circuit, and travels all over the Northwest with his humorous stories, user friendly songs,. His acoustic folk philosophy is guaranteed to leave you smiling. Armed with long-necked banjo and other weapons of mass delight, Tom will have you singing along in no time. Tune up your vocal chords; you'll need 'em, and you won’t be disappointed
Redboot Quartet July 16th.
You may have already heard their sweet sounds. Four skilled musicians fuse their eclectic backgrounds to produce a fiery blend of smoky Gypsy cabaret. Fierce original compositions test their capabilities. This four-piece boldly scorches its own sultry signature on classics like "Blue Drag". The result is a sensuous blend of dramatic gypsy and swinging jazz laced with a unique Balkan influence. They are as riveting to watch as they are to listen to. Each of the four players is a dedicated, accomplished musician with a quick ear, a passionate heart and a fire in the belly. Each brings a unique perspective to this union. But there is also a feisty side here, perhaps a tribute to the music they play...

THE COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF
RICHMOND
and their ARTISANS’ GALLERIA

Present the 3rd annual, OUT OF THE WOODWORK exhibition, which runs until May 19th. This year’s exhibition features wood pieces created from Ecofriendly wood only. Some of the pieces, while small, are very intricate and take many hours and even days to complete, there are also some very large pieces in the window made from tree stumps as well as many other creative works.

They are also participating in the DOORS OPEN event, which is held all over Richmond May 2 & 3rd from 10 – 4 each day. This event evolved out of the former Artists Among Us and this year is being held at 40 different locations.

Both of these events are a wonderful opportunity to view unique one of a kind works of art and be tempted to treat you or someone special to something “special”. The Community Arts Council of Richmond is also planning several other exhibitions in the next few months to be held at the Galleria and new work is arriving weekly from their artist members. This is the best place in Steveston to find top quality, reasonably priced work by local artists.

The Community Arts Council of Richmond has been supporting the arts and local artists for over 25years. By becoming a member you will help them to continue in this endeavor. Membership fees are pro-rated for the year and with a membership you will receive a 10% discount off any purchases as well as be informed and have an opportunity to become involved in all upcoming events. To join, please stop by the Artisans’ Galleria or go to their website, which is
www.richmondartscouncil.org to download an application form and get further information.

The Artisans’ Galleria is open daily and is located at 3651 Moncton St. in Steveston, 604-241-2790 for
more information.
