VOLUNTEER RICHMOND - Grab your mittens and lend a pair of hands as a volunteer for the 2008 Richmond Winter Festival!

“Winter Fest” is an outdoor street fair featuring live entertainment, ice skating, kid’s activities, community displays and a spectacular fireworks show. The event will take place Friday, February 8 from 5-10pm and Saturday, February 9 from 2-10pm between Richmond City Hall and Brighouse Park.

STEVESTON FOLK GUILD

Open stage 7.30-8.00 pm

Please note changes to format for the ‘Open Stage’’

Due to an unpredictable number of “Open Stage” performers each SFG event, we have decided to limit the open stage performers to a max of three (3) each SFG event. These spots must be confirmed prior to the concert event by emailing dave@stevestonfolk.org

Feature Performer 8.15 pm.
5880 Westwater Drive, Steveston BC

January 17th

The Neverly Sisters, Ellen van der Hoeven and Karen Kelm, perform an eclectic mix of musical genres, from modern and traditional folk, swing and classic country to their own original songs. Ellen’s grounding in traditional and contemporary folk music took shape in her many years with the folk trio, Three Strong Winds. Touring coffee houses and folk clubs throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, she supplied the lyrical top line for the group’s arrangements of songs about love, life, labour, and history. Karen’s musical theatre and big band background makes for an unlikely vocal partnership. Her longstanding tenure with Vancouver’s Preservation of Swing Band grounds her earthier vocals in jazz standards with a nod to classic country. Reaching back to her high school days when “nobody couldn’t play the guitar”, she finds her folk roots and meets Ellen somewhere in the middle.

Tickets $7 at the door. Doors open at 7 pm

6th Annual Jimmy Ng Memorial Street Hockey Tournament, May 24-25, 2008, 8am to 6pm, Steveston Community Centre (lacrosse box)

For additional information, call Jim Toogood at 604-271-9490 or e-mail JimToogood@shaw.ca.

About the tournament

Groups from all forms of emergency, community service, and business are invited to enter teams in this friendly non-competitive tournament. The Rotary Club of Steveston wishes all participants good luck.

Attendance at this annual tournament is by donation, with proceeds from attendance, player registration, food sales, and prize draws going towards support of local emergency services, and related prevention, and education.

The tournament is held in memory of Constable Jimmy Ng, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on September 15, 2002 while responding to a call when his marked police cruiser was hit by youths who were street racing.

Constable Ng grew up in Richmond, graduated from Matthew McNair High School, and joined the RCMP in 1996. He served his first 5 years in Duncan BC before transferring to Richmond to serve in the community in which he grew up.

Constable Ng was a member of the RCMP Richmond Detachment, C Watch, and an active local volunteer. He was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit No. 7, based in Steveston. As a volunteer member of this team he had taken part in many search and rescue missions.

With affectionate memory of Constable Jimmy Ng we express gratitude, admiration and respect to all of our Police Officers, Firefighters, Coast Guard Personnel, Ambulance Service, and all other emergency personnel who risk their lives on a daily basis for the betterment and safety of all.

THE COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF RICHMOND

Exciting News
COURTYARD GALLERIA

Will be moving to #130 3651 Moncton Street in Steveston Village in late February/early March and hope to re-open in their new larger premises later in March. The new spot is right in between the Cannery Café and the Tandori Indian restaurant.

The name of the store will be changed to the ARTISAN’S GALLERIA, and because it is double the size of the Courtyard Galleria, will be able to offer an even larger selection of juried

Art and work by local artists but still at very reasonable price.

The Arts Council and the Galleria will now be able to share space for the first time in several years and hope to be able to develop more exhibitions which will be free to view as well as new work for purchase from a variety of artists.

Watch for their grand opening announcement here and in the local papers. Until they move the Courtyard Galleria will remain open still offering an excellent selection of art, gifts, cards, jewellery, pottery and much more. Call 604- 241-2790 for more information.
