*MUSIC IN THE VILLAGE (At the park behind the Post Office Museum on Moncton St.) Coordinated by the Steveston Merchant Group on behalf of Steveston Merchants

Friday Aug 3 2-4
Greg Meloche
Greg Meloche has been performing in Richmond since 1995 as a regular at the Steveston Folk Guild and community events. He combines acoustic guitar and bodhran (Celtic drum) with the deep, smooth voice of a troubadour somewhere between Stan Rogers and Roger Whittaker. Greg performs original compositions and an eclectic mix of songs from traditional folk and country to 50’s and 60’s pop-rock. From the weird to the wonderful, expect the unexpected when Greg takes the stage.

Saturday Aug 10 1-3
Pender

Pender is the musical equivalent of Neil Young's Crazy Horse and Wilco having a potluck with Nirvana and Evan Dando Its a gathering of influences of country through punk rock, 80s synth to brit pop beats and a side of grunge for good measure served on unpretentious white paper plates. www.myspace.com/pendertheband

Saturday Aug 18 1-3
Xavier Skakun

Wesley Skakun and Rick Xavier, members of the Richmond Fusion Collective, bring together djembe and acoustic guitar for a unique blend of original soulful music. Their colourful rhythms and harmonic progressions create a gently engaging listening experience for a summer afternoon.

Saturday Aug 25 1-3
Cherelle Jardine and friends

Local recording artist and well known organizer of Musical Expressions, kicks back with some of her talented musician friends-(Doug Smith, Norm Avelino, Greg Meloche) to create a special concert in the park. Cherelle will be performing songs off her cd Head Traffic as well as newly written pieces. www.cherellejardine.com

Friday Aug 31 2-4
Dusty Hillbillys
Dave McArthur, Richard Sevigny

These guys play a mixture of folk, Celtic, some country and western, and soft vintage rock. You will hear great songs with strong vocal harmonies, which always go down well with audiences of all ages. Consisting of two guitars (Richard is an awesome rock guitarist), he plays lap steel guitar (Hawaiian steel guitar) which is a pretty neat instrument and will sure draw a crowd. Dave handles most of the vocals with his soft poignant songs, with a touch of country and a Celtic flavour. Richard delivers the down and dirty rock stuff. Together it’s a blast, and everyone has a great time

HELP WANTED

LOOKING FOR EMPLOYEES THIS SUMMER? HIRE A STUDENT!

The summer is in full swing, which means that there are hundreds of students who are looking for jobs in Richmond. The temporary and flexible labour services that secondary and post-secondary students provide can be a valuable resource for your business. If your company receives rush orders, has an employee on maternity leave or needs to improve office efficiency, hire a student. By calling the Richmond/South Delta Service Canada Centre for Youth, you can place a job order to be posted at our location at no charge.

Students can offer many skills including:
Flexibility – Students can often work days, evenings or weekends. Some are available for part-time employment, while others are available full-time. From physical labour to office work to computer programming, students can meet your needs.

Technological Skills – Today’s generation of young Canadians is among the best educated and most at ease with changing technologies. They have a lot to offer the workforce. But they have to start somewhere.

Learning is their Business – Students are talented and adaptable. Learning is their full-time job.

Community Enhancement – Summer jobs help students to enhance their employability skills, finance post-secondary education and contribute to the local economy.

Odd Jobs – Businesses and private households often have tasks that no one has time to do. Answering telephones, mowing lawns, faxing letters, or cleaning an office are jobs that students can help you with. Odd jobs help young people gain valuable work experience, and can last from one hour to several weeks.

The Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) – Richmond/South Delta encourages local businesses to hire a student this summer. Call 604.666.4383 to place a job order or visit us at our office in Lansdowne Centre.

For more information on the Government of Canada’s programs and services, please call the toll-free Youth Info Line at 1 800 935-5555, the touch-tone phone or teletypewriter line (TTY) at 1 800 926-9105 or visit us at servicecanada.gc.ca.
