Community Events March 2009:

Thirty-nine British Columbians representing 27 communities throughout the province were honoured at the sixth-annual BC Community Achievement Awards ceremony held at Government House in Victoria, March 10, 2009.

Lieutenant Governor Steven Point and Premier Gordon Campbell presented each recipient with a medallion on behalf of the BC Achievement Foundation.

"Each one of these award winners has made a lasting contribution to help all British Columbians by building stronger neighbourhoods, stronger communities and a stronger province," said Premier Gordon Campbell. "Their example teaches us what we can accomplish when we work together and give of our time and energy to support one another."

"It is a privilege to showcase and honour the contributions each of these recipients has made," said British Columbia Achievement Foundation chair Keith Mitchell. "The diversity of this year's recipients demonstrates that there are people contributing to building our province in every corner of B.C."

In total, 45 British Columbians from 30 communities received the 2009 award. Congratulation to the Steveston recipients of the 2009 awards:

GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY SOCIETY

What's Afloat: Boats on the Fraser River a fascinating new exhibit opening at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on May 2. If you've ever wondered about the myriad of different boats on the river, and what they all do, this exhibit will answer your questions! Visitors will also have a chance to buy the boat spotter's guide that goes along with the Exhibit. In addition the Cannery will be alive this summer as Joe Kovacs, along with interpreters and volunteers, builds an all-wood lapstrake skiff.
This is a summer long, major project that will introduce our visitors to traditional techniques that were used in Steveston’s wooden fish boat building industry. This is a great project to volunteer on and learn/demonstrate your wood working skills.
