Community Events July 2004:

BRITANNIA HERITAGE SHIPYARD

An exciting summer with visits by “tall” ships!!

On July 13 to 16, 2004 the City of Richmond will be hosting the Japanese training vessel Kaiwo Maru. Kaiwo Maru is a sister ship to the Nippon Maru which visited Richmond in 2002. She is a 4 masted barque, 361 feet overall, built in 1989 with a crew of 69, 108 cadets and 22 trainees.

From July 26 through August 20, 2004 the City of Richmond will host the Sailing Vessel Concordia at Britannia Shipyard, National Historic Site. Concordia is a 3 masted barkentine, 188 feet overall built in 1992. She is dedicated to educating a community of young people, preparing minds, values and ethics for responsible global citizenship in the twenty-first century and home to the renowned "Class Afloat" program.

August 20, 21, 22, 2004 Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site will host Richmond's first Maritime Festival with exhibits, demonstrations, music and activities for the whole family, including heritage boats of all shapes and sizes. Rope making, knot tying, net making and sea shanties will help celebrate Richmond's maritime history. Sailing "ship's boats" to steam tugs will be on display at the docks. Pirates aplenty - grog and victuals for all.

STEVESTON MUSEUM AND POST OFFICE

The Steveston Museum Society would like to remind all businesses and residents about the services they offer. Don’t forget when you are doing your any mailing that you buy your stamps and send your parcels through the Steveston Post Office. The Post Office is run by the Society and all proceeds are used to operate the Museum. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MUSEUM.

The Steveston Museum has completed a history exhibit called "STEVESTON RECOLLECTIONS: HISTORY OF A VILLAGE" which is now available online in the Community Memories program of the Virtual Museum of Canada website. It includes 197 pictures and text in a chronology of Steveston from its beginning to the Tall Ships Festival in 2002. It was done entirely by the local museum volunteers for the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), an agency of the federal Department of Canadian Heritage. GULF OF GEORGIA CANNERY NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Monday, August 2
Celebrating Salmon with the Nisga'a Nation. Afternoon festivities at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery with a salmon barbeque, music and dance with representatives of the Nisga'a nation. Co-hosted with the Canadian Fishing Co.

Summer Salmon Stomp
Date: Saturday, September 11
Time: 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm.

The Celtic band "Tiller's Folly will be performing in the Cannery for an evening of music and fun. Last year's concert was a great success, so make sure to get your tickets early!

A Stroll Through Steveston's History
Date: Saturday, July 17 (and Saturday, August 14)
Time: 1:00 pm Duration: 1 1/2 hrs

On July 17 or August 14, take a stroll back through time to the glory days of Steveston’s busy waterfront. Your guide, Meg, a two-decade veteran of the cannery, will meet you in the 1920s at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. From there, she will walk you through her memories of Steveston’s past. Your journey to the past ends with refreshments at Britannia Heritage Shipyard. with a shuttle back to the Cannery. Cost: $7 per person, $5 for members of the Cannery, Britannia, or Richmond Museum. This event is very popular, so reserve now by calling 604.664.9009

"MAYDAY: The Risky Business of Fishing" on exhibit now!

Planning a trip in Canada this year? Parks Canada national passes are available for sale at the GOG. These passes allow unlimited opportunities to visit national parks or national historic sites across Canada. They are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. CANVAS FOR BREAST CANCER

Please join Mark and Roxanne Glavina in a fund-raiser for Breast Cancer Research.

Roxanne will be participating in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Vancouver, taking place August 20-22, 2004. Proceeds will benefit the BC Cancer Foundation, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care at BC Cancer Agency.

This is an important journey, both for Roxanne and for cancer research - wont you help support the drive and “Canvas for Breast Cancer”? The cost is $20.00 per person, and includes refreshments and a hands-on demo, and you’ll leave with a completed piece and lots of tips for creating fun and unique works of art. Proceeds will go directly to Roxanne’s campaign.

LONDON HERITAGE FARM

London Farm tearoom is now open from noon to 5 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. We are also having an Art Show on July 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is the first annual "Fraser River Art Festival at London Heritage Farm". There will also be an Artist's Tea on Saturday, July 10 from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 11 from noon to 7 p.m. The art show will be co-hosted by the Richmond Artist Guild. We will have artists painting, art work for sale, live music, children's hands-on activities, and a piper for the opening ceremonies.

THE RICHMOND HOSPITAL AUXILIARY THRIFT SHOP

On June 22nd we held a luncheon at the Charthouse for Eleanor Bonnyman who recently retired after 27 years in the auxiliary. She was one of the driving forces in the shop and much of its success is due to her strong leadership.

We are still looking for volunteers. It is a lot of hard work, but also lots of fun and many friendships begin here. If you can spare some time, please call Jan Halliday, Manager, Volunteers Resources, at 604-244-5176.
